England booked themselves a quarter-final clash against France and Kylian Mbappe after a clinical victory over Senegal.

Gareth Southgate’s side were rocked by some early pressure from the Africa Cup of Nations winners, who forced Jordan Pickford into some brilliant saves. However, some excellent work from Jude Bellingham saw him whip a wonderful pass into Jordan Henderson, whose first-time finish left Chelsea goalkeeper Edouard Mendy with no chance.

Harry Kane also opened his goal-scoring account for the competition by finishing off a wonderful team move, before Bukayo Sake clipped his third goal of the tournament over Edouard Mendy. After a wonderful evening of football from the Three Lions, Daily Star Sport considers England’s route to the final.

An ominous tie against France on December 10 now looms on the horizon for England. Hours before Southgate’s side dispatched Senegal, Les Bleus made a huge statement by overcoming Poland 3-0.

And if that result was not intimidating enough, Mbappe slammed two incredible efforts into the top corner, after Olivier Giroud became France’s leading goalscorer. Didier Deschamps’ side are the reigning champions, having emerged victorious from the competition in Russia four years previously.

This will almost certainly be Southgate’s biggest ever test since he entered the England hotseat. If the Three Lions are able to record a historic result against their rivals across the channel, Spain, Morocco, Switzerland and, most significantly, Portugal and Cristiano Ronaldo could be waiting for them in the semi-final.

Spain take on Morocco in their first knockout tie of the competition, while Portugal will need to overcome Switzerland. Portugal and Spain will almost certainly be favourites in those fixtures, meaning the will likely face each other in the quarter-finals.

If England do break their World Cup semi-final duck and reach their first final in the competition since 1966, there will be many giants awaiting them. Holland and Argentina will face each other in the quarter-finals, while World Cup heavyweights Brazil and previous finalists and bogey team to England, Croatia, are also still in the mix.

However, considering this is the World Cup of shocks, it would be foolish to rule out Japan and South Korea, who have many huge scalps including Spain, Germany, and Portugal between them. If anything is for certain, England’s road to the World Cup final on December 18 is blocked by some football behemoths – Southgate’s side will need to be up for anything and everything.
