World Cup fans have been left tearing their hair out over what the 'total receptions' stat on TV means.

England's stunning performance in their 3-0 win over Senegal left a lot for fans back home to be chuffed about. But one thing that has confused viewers is a bizarre graphic shown throughout every World Cup game.

The graphic – displaying 'total receptions between midfield and defensive lines' – has appeared in both BBC and ITV's coverage while offering no explanation. And it has even left some fans on social media fuming.

One Twitter user wrote during the England game: "'Total receptions' popping up on the screen every ten minutes during ITV coverage is my favourite thing about this World Cup. What does it even mean? Does anyone care?"

Another asked: "Can anyone explain the 'total receptions' statistic that keeps being put on TV during World Cup games???"

A third raged: "That total receptions stat can get in the f***ing bin as well."

Some fans hypothesised that the World Cup in Qatar has taken a leaf out of the NFL's book by introducing the stat – which records when an offensive player catches a forward pass from another player who throws the ball from behind the line of scrimmage.

One user seemed to think it is simply a fancy term for interceptions, while others suggested it refers to when a player picks the ball up between the lines.

We await confirmation on just what the strange new stat refers to.
