The jury in Benjamin Mendy's rape trial have retired to consider their verdicts.

The Manchester City footballer, 28, and his friend Louis Saha Matturie, 41, have been on trial at Chester Crown Court since August, accused of various sex offences against young women.

The jury retired just after 2pm after Judge Steven Everett concluded his summing up of the evidence heard during the trial, and asked the jurors to reach unanimous verdicts on all 18 counts on the indictment.

He insisted there was "no pressure of time" and said that if verdicts could not been reached this week they will come back to court on December 19 to continue deliberations.

Mendy, who has been suspended without pay by City since September last year, denies seven counts of rape against four women, one count of attempted rape and one count of sexual assault, in total relating to six women.

His co-accused, Matturie, denies six counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, allegations relating to seven women. Both men have insisted that any sex was consensual.

The offences are alleged to have taken place at Mendy’s Cheshire mansion as well as a rented flat in central Manchester between October 2018 and August 2021.

Mendy spent three days giving evidence during the trial that began in mid-August, with City head coach Pep Guardiola among the witnesses called by the defence.

Prosecutor Timothy Cray KC described Mendy as a "predatory, serial rapist" who is "living in an unreal world" as he urged the jury to convict both men in his closing statement.

But Eleanor Laws KC, representing Mendy, said in each case that it was "one word against another" and that having "regret" at having "quick, animalistic sex" was not the same as being raped.

Ms Laws cited the video which emerged of one of the complainants having "enthusiastic" sex with Mr Matturie on an occasion she claimed she had been raped, adding that each allegation was "riddled with inconsistencies and flaws".
