Even an unexpected visit to the hospital isn't enough to prevent Dustin Poirier from responding to a Conor McGregor jibe.

The long-time UFC rivals revived their bitter feud on Monday after Poirier posted a picture on Instagram of him in a hospital bed hooked up to an IV. A second Story upload included the praying hands emoji alongside the words: "Going on day 2 in the hospital. S***'s getting serious."

ESPN reporter Brett Okamoto provided some context on the matter having spoken with Poirier on Monday. He tweeted that 'The Diamond' was battling a staph infection—a potentially serious ailment common in mixed martial arts—but had 'not responded to antibiotics in 24 hours.'

Sympathy was far from McGregor's mind, however, as the Dubliner responded to Okamoto's tweet: "Heal up soon scruffy knickers." Hospital visit or not, Poirier was content to reply and asked: "You done filming Roid House and ready to get slapped around again!?"

Along with his injury woes, McGregor has been away from the octagon while he films the Road House reboot ahead of his Hollywood debut. The 34-year-old has posted frequent updates regarding his bulked up physique while he's also been absent from doping tests, leading to steroid allegations.

McGregor finished Poirier in less than two minutes when they first met as up-and-coming featherweights in 2014. However, The Diamond has since returned the favour and then some, turning in two TKO victories over his Irish nemesis in 2021.

Despite the record reversal in their head-to-head, McGregor ploughed on with confidence in his retorts as he wrote: "Ye I’m in Amsterdam jacked like van damn. You weren’t just hurt pal. You were scared hurt don’t forget it.

"I’m coming back to put you in a box. Full of it. I’m sending you off this earth. Permanent. Stay waiting for the road house as well pal you and the missus will love it." Those last taunts regarding a 'permanent send-off' will be considered particularly unkind to father-of-one Poirier given his current health condition.

The second of his defeats to Poirier was McGregor's most recent outing in the octagon, which ended with him suffering a serious leg fracture. 'The Notorious' infamously goaded Poirier and his wife, Jolie, while he sat clutching his shattered shin in Las Vegas.

Those comments were considered by many to be of poor taste and indicative of a sore loser. For those who weren't already convinced, McGregor's latest tirade against a hospitalised former foe may give an unfortunate glimpse into his character.
