World Cup fans have blasted Sergio Busquets for smiling before the Barcelona legend missed his crucial Spain penalty.

The veteran midfielder had his tame spot-kick saved by Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou as Spain were beaten 3-0 in the shootout by the Atlas Lions. Busquets had been spotted smiling as he walked up and placed the ball down before taking his penalty, which fans have since criticised on social media.

Both Pablo Sarabia and Carlos Soler had earlier missed in the shootout, meaning Busquets missed allowed Achraf Hakimi to chip down the middle and secure Morocco a famous victory.

Following Busquets' miss, one fan tweeted: “Can we talk about how pitiful Busquets' penalty was LMAO.” Another added: “You know you're done for when you see Busquets stepping up to take a penalty.”

A third supporter wrote: “That wink and smile from Busquets before his penalty, he had it coming. Not everyone can pull a Pickford.” One more also commented: “Such horrible horrible penalties those were, especially Busquets.”

Busquets himself admitted that the defeat was cruel on Spain as they were knocked out of a third consecutive major tournament on penalties.

"It's a cruel way to lose," he explained, via Sport. "Morocco tired as the minutes passed and we had a chance at the end, the one with Pablo Sarabia, but it was not to be. It has not come off."

The 34-year-old was also asked about the prospect of retiring from international football, with Busquets set to be 38 before the end of the next World Cup.

He added: "That's not important right now. It's been a tough night but we are in a good dynamic. The group is very young. This will serve for a lot in the future."

The Spain captain was the only member of their squad in Qatar that won the World Cup in 2010. That tournament also remains the last time they reached the quarter-finals of the competition.
