Two men have been arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary in the same village as Raheem Sterling’s home.

Police said on Wednesday morning (December 7) they were trying to establish if there was a connection between the individuals and the break-in at the England star's house last week, which saw him return to the UK from the World Cup in Qatar.

Surrey Police said: “Two men were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary last night (December 6) in the Oxshott area. They are currently in custody.

“Following reports of suspicious activity around 6.40pm, a number of resources were deployed, including the dog unit and the police helicopter. Our colleagues from British Transport Police also provided assistance.

“Enquiries remain ongoing to establish whether there are any links between these arrests and the break-in reported to us over the weekend.”

However, on Wednesday afternoon the BBC reported police had clarified detectives were not linking the break-in at the home of Sterling and his family to the other attempted burglary in the same village, having ruled that out "at this time".

Chelsea winger Sterling missed England's 3-0 round-of-16 win against Senegal last weekend after deciding to fly home.

Gareth Southgate has said Sterling is free to return to the Three Lions squad at any point, but whether he will do so remains up in the air.

"We will have to wait and see, at the moment, clearly the priority is for him to be with his family and we're going to support that," Southgate told reporters after the Senegal victory.

“We’ve got to give him time to try to resolve that or be there for his family. That’s the most important thing at this time, so we’re going to give him that space."

Sterling, who started the first two games in Qatar, was the second England player to leave the camp after Arsenal defender Ben White returned home last month for personal reasons.
