Football fans have been left gutted as Clive Tyldesley has left the World Cup to return back to England early.

Tyldesley made up part of the ITV commentary team in Qatar – but he won't be commentating for the rest of the tournament. He announced his return on Twitter: "My 8th World Cup in the job of my dreams and the first time I’m going to be home before England! Thank you for your company."

Daily Star Sport understands it was always the plan for Tyldesley to leave Qatar at this point and was his decision.

68-year-old Tyldesley, who stood down as ITV's premier commentator in 2020 and was replaced by Sam Matterface, is a real favourite among British footy fans, and his departure ahead of the quarter-finals on Friday and Saturday has disappointed many.

One fan tweeted: "It’s a nationwide scandal that Clive Tyldesley isn’t the first name on the list for ITV’s coverage of England games!"

"Clive Tyldesley exiting a World Cup before the quarter-finals is a bigger upset than Germany not getting out of the groups," a second joked. While a third tweeted: "One of the greatest commentators ever bar none. Safe journey home Clive!"

A fourth added: "You and Coisty (co-commentator Ally McCoist) are the dream team and should absolutely be covering the final. Thank you for your dedication to your work. You are unmatched!"

Sam Matterface, Seb Hutchinson and Jon Champion will continue to commentate for ITV at the World Cup.

England's quarter-final clash with highly-fancied France will take place on ITV this Saturday (7pm KO), and they will also be showing the final alongside the BBC.
