Avengers: Infinity War brought together MCU characters and changed how audiences saw the iconic Marvel heroes, but a deleted scene reveals that one of the Guardians of the Galaxy has a secret power. Avengers: Infinity War introduced the full extent of Thanos’ power as the Mad Titan sought to gain all six Infinity Stones to wipe out half of the universe’s population. The film acted as the culmination of all those that had come before it.

Avengers: Infinity War’s culminated in a scene that saw Iron Man, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and the Guardians fighting Thanos on Titan while other heroes fought their parts of the battle all around the universe. Avengers: Infinity War was the first time the Guardians of the Galaxy met up with Earth’s heroes, so it was a great chance to show them interacting and showing off their abilities. First appearing in Guardians of the Galaxy: Vol. 2, Mantis powers in the MCU had been limited to empathic abilities, making her able to read other people’s minds as well as induce stasis via mind control – as she does to Thanos in Avengers: Infinity War.

With such an ambitious number of storylines, many scenes were filmed and did not make the final cut. One such scene takes place immediately after Thanos uses the Space Stone to smash a planet into Titan, sending an unconscious Quill, Drax, Nebula and Mantis flying into space only to be caught by Spider-Man. The deleted scene from Avengers: Infinity War shows Spider-Man talking to Mantis on the ground, encouraging her to use her healing abilities on the still-unconscious Guardians. The healing powers that are shown in the deleted scene would potentially make Mantis one of the most valuable members of the Guardians line-up. Forcing Quill, Nebula and Drax to regain consciousness, the Avengers: Infinity War deleted scene shows that Mantis allowed the heroes to survive Thanos’ attack, even though they are later turned to dust by the Titan’s master plan.

With unfinished special effects, it is difficult to believe that this deleted scene ever would have made it into the Avengers: Infinity War final cut, though it does provide some much-needed interaction between Spider-Man and his fellow teammates. After going out of his way to save the Guardians’ bodies floating into space, the final cut does not go back to Spider-Man and the Guardians of the Galaxy, nor shows how they regain consciousness. Neither of these elements are to Infinity War’s detriment, though the deleted scene does provide an informative insert, not only showing Mantis’ additional power but explaining how the Guardians came back.

Mantis and the other Guardians of the Galaxy will be returning in Thor: Love and Thunder, with the team travelling through space with the God of Thunder after they left Earth together at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Perhaps this sequel will provide further information on Mantis’ powers, either properly introducing her healing abilities or expanding on some of the character’s other abilities from the comics including astral projection and cloaking. As Phase Four of the MCU progresses, this Avengers: Infinity War deleted scene could prove vital to the continued survival of the Guardians of the Galaxy.
