Eagles’ Robert Quinn can match feat that hasn’t been done in 92 years, and he isn’t thrilled about it
Philadelphia Eagles defensive end Robert Quinn has a chance to match an NFL feat that has not been done in 92 years, and he would rather not be the one who gets to do it.
That feat: playing in 18 regular-season games in the same season.
If he does, he will also do so without the benefit of a bye week at any point during the season.
Quinn is not overly excited about that possibility, via the Delaware News Journal’s Martin Frank:
“That’s not really a record I’m looking for ― 18 games and no bye week,” Quinn said. “Come on, man. You can borrow my pads if you want to do that. I mean, 18 weeks, no bye week, Year 12. It’s a heck of an adjustment, and in a new city. … We’re just football players, right? We’re no longer humans once we put on the jersey.”
The workload is going to be a challenge for a 32-year-old, 12-year veteran. But making matters even more complicated is the fact he had to switch teams in the middle of the season, while his family, including a three-month child, are still back in Chicago. He is still living out of a hotel in Philadelphia.
It is the perfect storm of events that have put him in a position to achieve that feat. The Chicago Bears traded Quinn to Philadelphia just before their bye week, and just after the Eagles already had their bye week.
That means barring injury (or a rest week later in the season) Quinn has a chance to play in 18 games this season, making him the first player since 1930 to do so.
Prior to 1933, there was no standard for NFL schedules, so teams would routinely play as many as 18 or 19 games in a season. There were 15 players between 1925 and 1930 who played 18 and 19 games, with the last players to do so being Tony Kostos and Cookie Tackwell. They both played 18 games during the 1930 season.
Quinn has already played in nine games this season for the Bears and Eagles, recording one sack, eight total tackles and four quarterback hits. He had a monster year for the Bears a year ago, registering 18.5 sacks. He has 102 sacks in his 12-year career.
