The ex-Beatle was tragically killed on December 8th, 1980, when he was only 40 years old. The week would start out as a normal work week for Lennon and his wife, artist Yoko Ono. The duo, who had a five-year-old son at the time, had sat down with the publication for an interview three days earlier.

The interview would be released a month later in January of 1981; the issue would feature Lennon and Ono on the cover, with Lennon appearing completely nude.

The issue will be memorialized as a new collector’s item Rolling Stone is auctioning off. For the next 11 days, fans and collectors will have an opportunity to bid on a copy of the issue.

Rolling Stone revealed on its website’s store that a number of copies of the rare issue were recently unearthed after being kept in storage for over four decades!

When the Lennons sat down with Rolling Stone on the afternoon of December 5th, 1980, the duo had just recently released Lennon’s first record in five years, on November 17th.

Rolling Stone journalist Jonathan Cott would sit down with Lennon and Ono, and legendary rock and roll photographer Annie Lebowitz would shoot the iconic cover.

Cott and the Lennons would spend a lot of the interview discussing the brand-new record.

According to the publication, Cott would go on to write an obituary after Lennon’s death, instead of the publication’s original plan to release the interview “as the first issue of 1981.”

The full interview would not be published until three decades later in 2010.

Rolling Stone announced the news on their Instagram account on Monday.

The publication revealed more information about the auction in their online store.

According to Rolling Stone’s official store, the January 22nd, 1981 issue “became a coveted collector’s issue over the last four decades and is very hard to find in any condition, but a stack of copies was recently discovered in our archives, and we’re auctioning one of them.”

The coveted collector’s issue will also be signed by Rolling Stone founder Jann Wenner.

Wenner recently released his memoir, “Like A Rolling Stone,” in September.

Perhaps the most poignant detail of the auction will be where the proceeds will go; Rolling Stone also revealed “100% of net auction proceeds” will go to gun violence prevention efforts, Rolling Stone’s official store announcement reveals.

The auction begins today, December 5th, and will continue until Friday, December 16th at 5pm EST.
