Legends Of Tomorrow's Season 7 Finale Was Secretly A Perfect Ending

Warning: This post contains mild spoilers for Legends of Tomorrow.

Legends of Tomorrow’s season 7 finale was secretly a perfect ending. Two months following the season 7 finale, The CW cancelled Legends of Tomorrow, the Arrowverse series that spun off from The Flash and Arrow in 2016. The superhero show left off on a cliffhanger, not getting a proper series sendoff the way Supergirl and Arrow did previously. However, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

Legends of Tomorrow season 7 ended with the characters saying goodbye to Nate, who permanently joined the first iteration of Zari in her totem. Meanwhile, the rest of the Legends crossed paths with Booster Gold, a time traveler from the future who was stuck at a fixed point. While the Legends made a deal with him, Booster Gold ultimately sold them out to the time police after they caught up with him following his time traveling antics. Together with the Legends, Booster Gold was arrested by the time police, officially concluding the series. Considering Legends of Tomorrow was cancelled shortly thereafter, the ending of the series was abrupt, leaving the characters stranded and their stories unresolved.

While Legends of Tomorrow’s cancellation was a sad one, the series gave fans a glimpse of what the future had in store for each character — Sara and Ava have a daughter together, Astra runs a presidential campaign in 2040, Behrad becomes the star of a children’s TV show, and Zari is a rich and famous cosmetic industry leader. These are just a few examples of the Legends’ futures. In many ways, it offers fans of the series some closure knowing the characters go on to live their lives outside of the Waverider. Despite the show’s cancellation, audiences know how their stories will end regardless. What’s more, Legends of Tomorrow ending on a cliffhanger is perfect. It leaves their story open-ended. The tease of the Legends getting arrested by the time police allows the story to continue, even if fans won’t get to see it.

It’s likely the Legends will get out of this situation (like they always do) and refusing to wrap up the Arrowverse series in a traditional way that ties up all loose ends means their adventures can never really end. The spirit of the show remains intact and the Legends never die. Legends of Tomorrow season 7 already confirmed that the characters living a regular life off of the Waverider was not something the characters were prepared to do just yet. Their arrest and acquaintance with Booster Gold ensures their time on the Waverider and traveling to different eras won’t end anytime soon.

Legends of Tomorrow has always been wildly different to the Arrowverse’s other shows. It’s absurd, is quick to poke fun of itself and its sister shows, and infuses a deep-rooted sense of humor into all of its storylines and character shenanigans. It’s only apt that Legends of Tomorrow would end in a way that was unique and true to itself as well. Although the superhero series might be over for good, leaving the characters in a precarious situation while hinting at their futures aligns with the out-of-the-box nature of the show, which has never really played by the rules.
