Pokémon Master Journeys: What Is Project Mew?
In Pokémon Master Journeys, Ash's newest friend Goh is completing missions in order to join Project Mew. But what exactly does Project Mew entail?

Pokémon Master Journeys: What Is Project Mew?

One of Pokémon Master Journeys’ prominent storylines has been Goh’s involvement in Project Mew – so what is it? Pokémon’s most recent anime is nearing the end of its run. In contrast to their predecessors, Pokémon Journeys and the current Pokémon Master Journeys have taken a different approach to storytelling. Usually, Pokémon’s anime protagonist Ash Ketchum travels to a new region that coincides with the latest release of a mainline Pokémon game, finding new friends and beating the Pokémon Gyms along the way to challenge the Pokémon League. This time, while Ash and his new friend Goh have traveled to Pokémon Sword and Shield’s Galar Region, they also travel throughout the entire Pokémon world as research fellows, encountering new Pokémon and challenges along the way.

Goh, Ash’s latest companion, dreams of catching every type of Pokémon there is, including Mew. Throughout Pokémon Master Journeys, he’s been working to fill his Pokédex with all kinds of Pokémon, including the legendary and mythical ones. He’s even managed to catch Suicune, a legendary water-type first introduced in Pokémon’s second-generation games. His fascination with Mew started as a small child when he and his friend Chloe encountered it during a Pokémon Summer Camp hosted by Professor Oak.

Mew, a psychic-type mythical Pokémon introduced in Pokémon’s first region, is one of the most elusive Pokémon in the franchise’s world. It is believed that all Pokémon are descendants of Mew, as it is said to contain the genetic codes of all other Pokémon. It can make itself invisible at will, meaning that it has rarely been seen in the wild and is often believed to be extinct. Legend has it that Mew only shows itself to those who are pure of heart. Catching such an elusive Pokémon would seem impossible, but Goh and a few other select Pokémon trainers are part of Project Mew: a research project with the sole aim of finding Mew to better understand the origins of Pokémon.

The research is spearheaded by Professor Amaranth, a Pokémon professor newly introduced in Pokémon Master Journeys. Project Mew’s members are chosen through a tough selection process. Trainers who wish to join the project are labeled Challengers and are sent on daring trial missions to earn tokens. The more trials are completed, the more tokens are earned, and with enough tokens, a Challenger can become a Chaser, a full-fledged member of Project Mew. One such mission saw Ash’s old rival Gary locate the legendary fire-type Moltres and collect a feather from it, while another mission saw Goh locate a wild Kingdra and catch it. These missions are akin to the Field Research Tasks in the mobile game Pokémon GO, where completing certain tasks in regards to catching, battling, and evolving Pokémon can lead to rewards.

Considering Goh’s childhood fascination with Mew and his desire to befriend and catch Pokémon, Project Mew is a perfect fit for Goh’s character. He is passionate about Pokémon and relates to them easily, and as such, Project Mew’s trial missions have given Goh a chance to develop his character in the anime, and his rivalry with Gary and his successes throughout the Project Mew missions have helped his confidence grow. As a result of his participation in Project Mew, Goh is truly working towards his dream of catching every Pokémon.

The latest episodes of Pokémon Master Journeys have shown that Goh only has a few more missions to complete before he can become a full-fledged member of Project Mew. While there are sure to be some more obstacles along the way, having Goh’s arc in the current series of Pokémon Master Journeys end with him becoming a Chaser would be a great starting point for future series. And, who knows? If Goh does become a Chaser, the return of Project Mew in later anime series is more likely, and old lore questions about Mew and its significance within the Pokémon world might finally get an answer.
