Jerrod Carmichael Announced As ‘Golden Globe Awards’ Host For 80th Anniversary
The “Golden Globes” have announced that Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael will serve as the host for the 2023 return of the awards show. Carmichael is hosting the ceremony scheduled for next month on NBC. The awards show and NBC issued the announcement jointly earlier today via Twitter.
Jerrod Carmichael To Host 80th Anniversary Of ‘The Golden Globe Awards’
As reported by The Blast, the awards show is returning for its 80th anniversary next year as part of a one-year broadcast deal with NBC. The news comes after a banner year for Carmichael. His 2022 HBO stand-up special, “Rothaniel,” saw him come out as gay. He also hosted “Saturday Night Live” earlier this year.
As The Blast reported in July, the comedian signed a two-year contract with HBO that is estimated to be valued in the eight-figure range. The deal includes creating a new stand-up comedy special, his fourth, for HBO.
Carmichael’s work on “Rothaniel” also netted him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special earlier this year. He received another Primetime Emmy nomination for his guest host appearance on “SNL.”
Previously, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association opted to hold the Golden Globes back this year in the fallout of a story by The Los Angeles Times in February 2021. According to the story, HFPA was “engaging in unethical conduct and suspect financial practices.” A lack of diversity among HFPA members was also pointed out.
The expose resulted in major celebrities and publicists distancing themselves publicly from the HFPA and Golden Globes. Actor Brendan Fraser, who is receiving a lot of award buzz at the moment for his film “The Whale,” has already said he won’t participate in next month’s Golden Globes.
After the release of the story by the LA Times, NBC opted out of broadcasting the Golden Globes earlier this year, with the network publicly stating, “We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right.” The aftermath of the exposé saw celebrities and publicists also publicly distancing themselves from the HFPA and Golden Globes.
The HFPA now appears to be seeking to clean up its image with the upcoming awards ceremony’s return early next year. Nominees for the awards will be announced on Monday, December 12 at the Beverly Hilton by the “Lopez vs. Lopez” stars George Lopez and Mayan Lopez. The award nominees will air live from 5:35 AM to 5:40 AM PT on NBC’s “Today.”
The “80th Annual Golden Globe Awards” is set to air on NBC and the network’s streaming service, Peacock, on Tuesday, January 10, 2023. The broadcast will be available live coast-to-coast at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT. The ceremony will be held at the awards show’s longtime home the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. Dick Clark Productions and Jesse Collins Entertainment are producing the awards show in association with the HFPA.
