Ronnie O’Sullivan produces magical moment after huge slice of luck at English Open

The old saying goes that there's a thin line between genius and insanity, and Ronnie O'Sullivan's English Open win over Dechawat Poomjaeng showed shades of both.

'The Rocket' was forced to respond from two frames down before winning 4-2 to book his place in the third round at the Brentwood Centre. That comeback required no small amount of skill from the seven-time world champion, but snooker icon O'Sullivan would be lying if he said luck didn't also play its part.

And it was a particularly chaotic second frame that saw Poomjaeng storm into a commanding lead following a frantic duel to pot a re-spotted black. But not before O'Sullivan sunk the black earlier in the same frame from what appeared an impossible angle.

It was only seconds before that the 47-year-old enjoyed a huge slice of fortune. After trying to miss the black which was dangerously near the pocket, the red that he struck triple-kissed the cue ball in quick succession to veer into another pocket by accident.

O'Sullivan was unsurprisingly all smiles at the incident, shaking his head in disbelief that his break was somehow kept alive. Poomjaeng, 44, looked similarly stumped by the shot but grinned in response to his opponent.

Any suspicions O'Sullivan's powers might be waning were almost instantly disproved by his next shot, however, which could go down as one of the best of the tournament. With the black huddled over a corner pocket, The Rocket somehow managed to evade the two reds banked either side to convert with laser precision.

It may not have been sufficient to win the frame, though the 2017 English Open-winner eventually found his rhythm to advance in Essex. And O'Sullivan couldn't speak highly enough of second-round foe Poomjaeng and his unorthodox style.

“He’s fantastic," he told Eurosport when appraising Poomjaeng after Wednesday's result. "Great fun. He’s off his head! I thought I’ve just got to try and be off my head more! He’s on another planet. I want to be on that planet.”

O'Sullivan will be among the early risers on Thursday when he faces Martin Gould in the third round. As if his peers didn't have a hard enough task in beating The Rocket to the grand prize in Brentwood, it seems luck is also running in O'Sullivan's favour as he seeks to end 2022 on a high.
