CATEGORY COMMENTARY: Could we see a repeat of best supporting actress of 1949 in this year’s supporting actor category?

Mercedes McCambridge won the Oscar for supporting actress for “All the King’s Men” (1949) over four others who represented two movies — Ethel Barrymore and Ethel Waters from “Pinky” and Celeste Holm and Elsa Lancaster from “Come to the Stable.”

This year, we could see two men Brendan Gleeson and Barry Keoghan from “The Banshees of Inisherin” and Paul Dano and Judd Hirsch from “The Fabelmans,” all four of which got in the Critics Choice nominations.

The only ones that could break it up would be Eddie Redmayne for “The Good Nurse” and Brian Tyree Henry for “Causeway” but as one strategist put it, “there are too many movies to watch, so people aren’t going to watch a movie for just one performance.”

This points to their two respective movies not contending in any other categories.

We’ll see if they’re right.
