Prince Harry & Meghan Markle Reveal They Almost Moved Abroad in 2019 & Explain Why the Plan Failed

One major bombshell that was dropped during Harry & Meghan part two was that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle actually had attempted to relocate out of the UK once before…and had actually received approval to do so.

In episode 5 of the series, Prince Harry revealed that they had been approved to move to South Africa in 2019 and Prince William, King Charles, and Queen Elizabeth were all aware.

“No one else knew, it was an internal document, and then it was leaked to the Times newspaper,” Harry said, adding the reason why it ended up being scrapped. “Then that whole plan was then scrapped. Once plans like that become public debate, nine times out of 10, it’s going to fail.”

They clarified that they still wanted to be working royals.

“We thought it would be good to give ourselves some breathing space, but also we were really passionate about continuing our work throughout the Commonwealth, to support the Queen,” Harry said, adding that the royal rota reporters would not be on-site in the country, which was desirable.

When Prince Harry and Meghan Markle decided in 2020 that they wanted to move to Canada, they were hesitant to put the request in writing due to fears of it leaking.

“By the time I was speaking to my father from Canada, the family and their people knew that we were trying to find a different way of working for a minimum of two years. Minimum. ‘Okay, Canada,’ I was speaking to my father. ‘This is the plan,'” Prince Harry said. “And he says, can you put it in writing? And I said, ‘I’d rather not, because of what happened last time,'” Prince Harry said.

“He says, ‘I can’t do anything unless you put it in writing,’ so I put it in writing,” Harry continued. “Sent him emails on the 1st and the 2nd and 3rd of January. And in one of those, I’d mentioned in one of those, if this wasn’t going to work out, then we would be willing to relinquish our Sussex titles if need be. So that was the plan.”

Meghan added, “His dad said, ‘Put it in writing.’ And he did and five days later it was on the front page of the newspaper.” A January 2020 headline from The Sun flashed on the screen and read, “The Sun has learned they will start discussing their plans with senior royals — expected to include the Queen and Prince Charles — in the coming days.”
