Night Sky: Ending Explained (In Detail)

Although Night Sky's season 1 finale does not resolve all of its underlying mysteries, it leaves room for speculation regarding its sci-fi elements.

Prime Video’s Night Sky ending leaves room for several exciting theories and explanations. Although Night Sky begins as a character study of a grief-stricken couple, its narrative soon unravels into a slow-burn sci-fi fantasy that involves teleportation, an interstellar cult, and alien bunkers. Similar to ABC’s Lost, Night Sky initially uses its science fiction elements as devices to drive its characters’ personal, human plotlines. However, the series dramatically picks up its pace in the last few episodes and builds a strong foundation for its cosmic conundrums, and although Night Sky does resolve many of its mysteries towards the end, it leaves viewers with more questions than answers.

Night Sky‘s runtime is split between two parallel storylines. One revolves around a couple, Franklin and Irene (Venom: Let There Be Carnage‘s J.K. Simmons and Sissy Spacek), who harbor a mysterious portal to another planet in their backyard shed. Things get complicated, though, when Jude (Chai Hansen) suddenly shows up in the bunker one day. Meanwhile, a second narrative unfolds in Argentina, where a teenage girl, Toni (Rocío Hernández), learns that there’s a lot more to her family history than meets the eye and is somehow connected to the Franklin and Irene’s shed.

In Night Sky‘s pivotal moments, Frank and Irene learn that the planet they have observed for years has breathable air and accommodates a secret civilization. Meanwhile, Jude and Denise end up in Bangkok in the pursuit of finding Jude’s father, Gabriel, and Toni and her mother cross paths with another apostate who seems to have some bad blood with Cornelius. With so many revelations in Amazon’s Night Sky season 1, there is a lot to be speculated and understood about its overarching themes and intriguing plotlines. Night Sky’s Caerul Explained

In Night Sky episode 8, “Compensation,” a brief banter ensues between Toni and Cornelius, in which Cornelius wins her trust by revealing that her father, Caleb, is living in a place called Caerul. Although nothing more about Caerul is revealed in Night Sky‘s first season, the fact that Caleb is living in Caerul implies that it is either the name of the alien planet where the show’s overarching cult is located or the name of the specific location on the planet where the Night Sky cult has been established. Interestingly, the word “Caerul” is derived from the Latin word “caeruleum,” which means “blue.” This could be a subtle nod to the alluring blue starry sky that initially helped Frank and Irene deal with grief and later inspired them to explore the planet’s mysteries.

What Happened To Byron In Night Sky?

Carrying the heavy burden of proving his worth to his wife, Franklin’s nosey neighbor, Byron, takes a leap of faith and steps out on the planet with a spacesuit on. At first, he seems fine as he finds Irene’s teleported coffee table lying in the middle of nowhere, but soon after, he disappears from sight, with his whereabouts remaining unknown throughout the rest of the season. While, initially, it seems like Byron may have died, Prime Video’s Night Sky‘s ending indicates that he could very well be alive and might have ventured off further into the ruins of the planet.

Byron’s excitement before Frank lost his signal on the walkie-talkie suggests that he, too, found the hidden civilization on the planet and decided to get a closer look at it. By doing so, it would not take him long to learn that the planet’s air is breathable and its land is inhabitable. However, even if he did manage to reach the cults dwelling on the planet, the cult’s intolerance toward traitors and intruders indicates that they are determined to keep their existence a big secret and will not welcome a new member with open arms. As a result, even if Byron is still alive, his life is probably in danger.

Why Denise Left With Jude

Denise’s decision to leave with Jude comes in tandem with a previous scene where she opens up to Franklin. During a visit to her father’s grave, Denise pours her heart out and confesses to Franklin that she has not been too happy with her life lately. She further adds that her fears harken back to her father’s struggles with depression, due to which she’s thinking about dropping out of school. Franklin supports her decision and advises her to learn to trust herself. She later takes Franklin’s advice to heart and decides to leave with Jude as it feels like the right thing to do at that moment. Denise learns to trust her instincts and realizes that Jude still has a lot to learn about the real world because of being trapped in the cult all his life. Knowing that it would be hard for him to survive all by himself in a new city, she takes it upon herself to help him find his father. This way, she also finds a new sense of purpose and the opportunity to start afresh.

Why Gabriel Left Hannah In Night Sky

Hannah’s final reveal shows that she had been secretive about her real identity when Jude visited her to ask about his father. However, it seems like she points him in the right direction, and without completely giving away Gabriel’s whereabouts, she insinuates that Jude could find something in his father’s books. In one of the books, The Count of Monte Cristo specifically, Jude eventually finds the code to his father’s location and decides to follow him there with Denise.

Whether or not Gabriel is still in touch with her is still a mystery. However, considering that Hannah, too, is an apostate who escaped the cult-like Jude and Gabriel, it is clear that Gabriel and Hannah’s first encounter was no accident. Hannah claims that Gabriel suddenly disappeared from her home one day, but she is probably lying about it. Instead, he probably left her to further expand their army of apostates to fight the cult, while it is also possible that he left Hannah (Sonya Walger, Lost) after realizing that her secret operations against the cult were putting his life in danger.

The Fallen World’s Splinter Cult Explained

When Hannah intercepts Cornelius, she confronts him by welcoming him to the “Fallen World.” This could either mean that the cult calls Earth “the Fallen World” because the planet fails to live up to its idealistic standards, or it could imply that the Fallen World is the name of a splinter cult on Earth that knows all about Caerul and its inner workings but is not directly a part of the cult. Night Sky‘s first season does not reveal much about the Cult of Caerul, but little details throughout the show suggest that Jude’s mother ranks among its higher-ups.

The cult members also seem to use Latin greetings and scriptures, and it is evident that the cult has an extremely low tolerance toward anyone who could potentially reveal their secrets to the world. Cornelius’ references to god also suggest that the cult’s beliefs are grounded in religion, and the members believe that the alien bunkers and the haven in Caerul are a gift from a higher power. Furthermore, Jude’s lack of awareness about pop culture, laws, and society, in general, shows that the cult members are kept completely isolated from everything that happens on Earth.

What Does Hannah Want From Cornelius?

Cornelius is portrayed as one of the most ruthless guardians of the cult. Therefore, it is possible that when Hannah escaped the cult, Cornelius tried to track her down and gave her a hard time on Earth. This is probably why Hannah seems vengeful toward him and playfully warns him that they will have a lot of fun together. While her ulterior motives are still shrouded in mystery, she might also use Cornelius (Piotr Adamczyk) as a pawn to somehow attack the cult from the Fallen World.

Why Irene And Franklin Found The Bunker After Michael’s Death

Franklin and Irene have different perspectives surrounding their discovery of the bunker. While Franklin is more skeptical and thinks that it was a mere coincidence, Irene firmly believes that it is all somehow connected to her son’s death. Both possibilities exist, but for now, Franklin’s stance seems more plausible. However, considering all the supernatural underpinnings associated with the alien planet and its cult, the bunker’s sudden appearance after Micheal’s death could be a matter of serendipity, fate, or even destiny. At the moment, the possibilities for the bunker’s true purpose seem endless in Night Sky.
