Everything We Know About Heartstopper Season 2

Warning: SPOILERS for Heartstopper season 1 ahead.

Heartstopper season 1 debuted at #7 in Netflix’s global top 10 during the weekend of its release, prompting the streaming giant to greenlight Heartstopper season 2 and beyond. The coming-of-age drama centers on 10th grader Charlie Spring (Joe Locke), his friends at Truham Grammar School, and his crush-turned-boyfriend Nick Nelson (Kit Connor). The new series garnered an impressive 14,550,000 viewing hours according to data released the Tuesday following Heartstopper season 1’s release, and fans started straight away to ask for its renewal.

Heartstopper season 1 followed Charlie and his friends Tao and Isaac as they coped with their friend Elle moving to another school, especially as they were often tormented by the school bully Harry. This big change happened simultaneously with Charlie being assigned a new homeroom deskmate, Nick, towards whom he started to develop romantic feelings. Heartstopper season 1 also explored Nick’s soul-searching, as he realized that he was attracted to Charlie before coming eventually coming out to his mother, Sarah (Olivia Coleman), in the Heartstopper season 1 finale.

Netflix’s Heartstopper is based on Alice Oseman’s webcomic turned graphic novels series of the same name. While Heartstopper season 1 followed the events narrated in the first two volumes, its central characters also appear in other works by Oseman, making the pool of possible storylines for Heartsopper season 2, season 3, and beyond.

Heartstopper Season 2 Renewal Status

Netflix confirmed the renewal of Heartstopper season 2 on May 20, 2022, in addition to season 3. The news was shared on various social networks by Netflix and Heartstopper’s creator, Alice Oseman, including on Instagram, with a timelapse of an adorable drawing of Nick and Charlie. Oseman will return as a writer for both seasons 2 and season 3, and it’s expected that series director Euros Lyn and executive producer Patrick Walters will also return in their respective capacities.

How Heartstopper’s Ending Sets Up Season 2

As Heartstopper season 1 ended with Charlie and Nick happily spending their summer together as boyfriends, and with Nick coming out to his mother, Sarah, it’s highly likely that their relationship will take center stage in Heartstopper season 2. Heartstopper season 1 episode 8 also hinted at possible unspoken feelings between Tao (William Gao) and Elle (Yasmin Finney), therefore, their friendship—that could possibly be something more—could be explored. Charlie’s secret ex Ben (Sebastian Croft) has also been lurking, and will likely continue to cause him and Nick problems they’ll have to deal with after going public with their relationship.

Heartstopper Season 2 Cast: Who Could Return?

Charlie’s friends will surely come back, including Doctor Who newcomer Yasmin Finney, who will return as Elle. Similarly, William Gao and Tobie Donovan will return as Tao and Isaac, respectively, and Corinna Brown and Kizzy Edgell will likely return as Tara and Darcy, Elle’s new friends, with whom Nick bonded in Heartstopper season 1 episode 6. Olivia Colman will undoubtedly come back as Nick’s mom Sarah, and Heartstopper season 2 couldn’t be back without Joe Locke and Kit Connor as Charlie and Nick.

Heartstopper Season 2 Predicted Release Date

It’s unknown when Heartstopper season 2 will be released. Filming for season 1 started in April 2021 and took three months to shoot in the UK, but the series was not released on Netflix until April 2022 so an exact timetable is difficult to establish. Assuming Elle’s character does return without a recast, Yasmin Finney’s schedule could complicate things as filming for Doctor Who is known to take a considerable amount of the year. With Heartstopper season 2 likely being more of a priority for Netflix than season 1, given its relative success, it’s possible fans could see a release before the end of 2023.
