Pete Davidson Leaves Saturday Night Live After 8 Years: ‘I Owe SNL My Life’

Pete Davidson, 28, is known nowadays as the man who took on Kanye West, online, to protect his girl who is a lawyer. And by that we mean, Kim Kardashian. The news is in that Davidson is leaving “Saturday Night Live”.

And he already has a gig and a girl lined up, although he made sure to say how much he would miss being on SNL, and how it saved his life. Here’s Pete Davidson, taking his last bow.

The Youngest Star On SNL

On Saturday night, “Saturday Night Live” closed out yet another season, and it bid adieu to many of its cast members, including Pete Davidson. Davidson joined the show’s 40th season premiere in September 2014, and at the time, he was just 20, and the first cast member to hail from the ’90s. He has remained one of the youngest stars on the show.

In an Instagram post shared by his friend and collaborator Dave Sirus, Davidson wrote, “When I got the show I was 20 years old and I had no idea what I was doing. I still don’t but especially back then. I wasn’t really a sketch performer I was just a stand-up. I knew I could never keep up or go toe to toe with a Kenan Thompson or a Kate McKinnon so I was super scared at figuring out what I could possibly bring to or do for such a historic, respected show and platform. I figured since I’m a stand up I’ll just try my stand-up and personal bits on Weekend Update as myself and I’m so glad I did.”

Here’s a little montage video of him on the show.

The last episode of the season featured “Russian Doll” star Natasha Lyonne as a host, with Japanese Breakfast as the musical guest. Along with Pete Davidson, this show marked the final performance of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant, and Kyle Mooney. Davidson came on the “Weekend Update” section to talk about his years on SNL, on the late-night show and mentioned Kanye West and Ariana Grande. His exit was confirmed from the NBC series, beforehand.

Pete Davidson Claimed SNL Crew Taught Him A Lot

In the Instagram post by Pete’s friend, Dave Sirus, Pete writes: “This video was taken eight years ago. Jerrod [Carmichael] sent it to me last night and it made me super emotional in the best way. In the video, I had just gotten back from doing my very first Update and sketch. It’s crazy to think that today I’ll be doing my last one. I got to share so much with this audience and literally grow up in front of your eyes. We were together through the good and the bad, the happiest and the darkest of times.”

Davidson also went on to say how he owed SNL and all the people he worked with so much, saying, “I owe Lorne Michaels and everyone at SNL my life. I’m so grateful and I wouldn’t be here without them. I appreciate you guys always having my back and sticking up for me even when that wasn’t the popular opinion. Thank you for always believing in me and sticking by my side even when it seemed comical. Thank you for teaching me life values, how to grow up and for giving me memories that will last a lifetime. SNL is my home. I’m so happy and sad about tonight’s show. For so many reasons I can’t explain. Can’t wait to be back next year in a Mulaney musical number.”

He signed off the note as “Resident young person Pete Davidson”

SNL’s Instagram handle commented on Sirus’ post, writing, “We are all very excited to celebrate your SNL career tonight Pete! ?”

SNL Brought In ‘Big Changes’ To Pete Davidson

Even before his leaving, SNL impacted his life in a big, big way, when in season 47, Kim Kardashian made her hosting debut. At the time, she spoofed “The Bachelorette” but it was an Aladdin skit that put the two in close contact. The now very-much-in-love couple shared a smooch and she later admitted, “When we kissed, I was just like, ‘Hmm!’ ”

The couple’s romance is going strong and steady, never mind Kanye, and you’ll soon see the “King of Staten Island” actor as the star of the upcoming Peacock series, “Bupkis”. The show will revolve around a fictionalized version of Davidson’s life, as Edie Falco will play his mother. Davidson is co-writing the show along with Dave Sirus and Judah Miller and the three will also executive produce the show, along with SNL creator, Micheals.

Here’s him, bidding SNL adieu.
