Deontay Wilder wants Anthony Joshua fight as trainer warns Brit would be in ‘big trouble’

Deontay Wilder's iconic trainer Malik Scott has warned Anthony Joshua he'd be in trouble if he agreed to a titanic showdown with the American in 2023.

The two heavyweights are currently at a crossroads in their respective careers, with Wilder returning to the sport in October. After taking a year out following his brutal trilogy clash with Tyson Fury, 'The Bronze Bomber' wasted little time in knocking out Robert Helenius in the opening round.

Joshua meanwhile, is still reeling from his rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in August. 'AJ' did then verbally accept a challenge from Fury to go at it December, but negotiations broke down with both sides left blaming each other for the collapse.

Now Wilder's trainer Malik Scott has said he wants his man fighting again in March, and was clear about his preferred opponent: "I hope to see him back in the ring by March and back in training in January. Negotiations are going on at the moment with a few guys," he told Kate Abdo on The Good Fight podcast.

"If it was up to me, Deontay would fight Anthony Joshua next. I wanted Usyk or AJ but he has now basically declined and he has major plans for Tyson Fury. AJ is available but is he mentally available? Is he willing to fight Deontay right now?"

Scott, himself a former heavyweight world title contender, suggested Joshua's defeats to "smaller guy" Usyk have caused a reluctance to face Wilder's bombs: "The fight was supposed to already have happened. He is a big-time boxer and he is only getting older, let's get these big fights made.

I think it should happen but we can want it all we want, AJ and his team need to want it and Eddie Hearn needs to want to do good business. I think it is a three-round fight. Deontay comes fast and if you can't get out of the way of it, you are in trouble. If AJ signs the contract, he is in trouble."

Joshua himself was remain tight-lipped since his proposed clash with Fury was scuppered. However, he has revealed an intention for a long-awaited second bout with British rival Dillian Whyte.

'The Gypsy King' has inevitably stuck his oar in as well, calling for Wilder to face Joe Joyce while he builds-up to Usyk. That unification clash is expected to take place in Saudi Arabia in early 2023.
