Boom Battle Bar review: Perfect equation for fun, frolics, impromptu singing and axes

The famous Einstein equation of course goes: axes + booze x people from work = ???!!??!!.

But if you'd have thought the relativity-bothering Nobel prize winner wouldn't be a huge fan of the BOOM BATTLE BAR in London's iconic O2, you'd be wrong. Axe-throwing is only a small (and fun) part of the overall experience.

Luckily the German-born theoretical physicist was fond of crazier golf. And augmented reality darts. And shuffleboard. And American pool. And of course karaoke, so this place is right down his wormhole.

But you don't just have to be a quantum theory of light-enjoying physicist to enjoy the large split-level bar on the main thoroughfare of bars and restaurants at the impressive The O2 in Greenwich.

We'll let you into a secret, the Daily Star online team only have a rudimental grasp of gravity's effect on space and time.

But they do know how to (Christmas) party – and with that in mind the BOOM BATTLE BAR was the perfect venue for us.

Crazier golf over nine challenging holes was the first order of the day with increasing difficulty. I took no pleasure in winning (handsomely) but there was one hole that completely flummoxed me. See if it gets you too.

Darts has been pared back for those not troubling the PDC. All you have to do is hit a segment, which really helps if you're also hitting doubles from the extensive cocktail menu.

Don't be fooled by the shuffleboard – it's deceptively hard (Image: Boom Battle Bar)

Shuffleboard is harder than it looks – a little shove can have dire consequences unless you get it spot on. On top of that I was informed of a restraining order delivered by Star staff not to let me near the karaoke booth.

Like my old pal Einstein, I don't think me and axes mix. After six attempts I couldn't crack it, even though my opponents were racing ahead.

They say there's nothing more gratifying than getting it right. I'll have to take their word for it…

But it's not just about the games.

A Christmas party needs a good space for people to chat, music that isn't me on the karaoke, a dance floor and quiet corners for some (nameless) people to sneak off… Tony.

So it's good to know that the BOOM BATTLE BAR has you covered there too.

There's a comprehensive cocktail list and a forever-evolving Boom Bites menu, catering for a variety of tastes with its street food and range of chicken wings.

It's everything you need for the perfect night out and you don't need to be an Einstein to work that out.
