Catherine Varitek — the wife of former Boston Red Sox catcher Jason Varitek — spent some of Thursday criticizing Xander Bogaerts on Twitter for his decision to sign with the San Diego Padres.

Is he though?

Trust me I love Bogaerts, I wanted to see him here always. It was OBVIOUS he was such a huge part of the organization. But this is a cutthroat business… And it’s all about the $$. If Xander truly wanted to stay in Boston he would be here. 40 man roster not 1. https://t.co/4bATfXiUAA

While she does preface the tweet with “I love Bogaerts” and some other praise for the shortstop, it seems clear that Varitek is taking ownership’s side on this. Bogaerts, a four-time All-Star who has spent his entire 10-year career with Boston and won two World Series titles, agreed to an 11-year, $280 million contract with the Padres on Wednesday night.

She started her Thursday morning Twitter session by posting this GIF with the caption “11 years.”

Jason Varitek spent all 15 years of his MLB career with the Red Sox from 1997 through 2011. “Tek” served as Boston’s captain for his final seven seasons from 2005 to 2011 and was crucial in helping the franchise break the “Curse of the Bambino” in 2004 (while winning another World Series title in 2007).

The 50-year-old former backstop was selected by the Seattle Mariners in the first round of the 1994 MLB June Amateur Draft but was traded with fellow 2004 World Series winner Derek Lowe to the Red Sox in exchange for closer Heathcliff Slocumb in July 1997. Varitek made three AL All-Star teams, won one Gold Glove and one Silver Slugger award, and currently serves as the team’s game planning coordinator.
