Former Sunderland goalkeeper Craig Gordon has been rushed to hospital after a sickening collision with Steven Fletcher left his leg bent backwards.

The 39-year-old was carried off midway through the second half with his leg in a brace. Subsequent emerging photographs suggest the Scotland number one has done serious damage.

Gordon’s right leg looked to be pointing backwards after the horrific collision with the former Sunderland ace. The former Scottish international will likely have to spend Christmas in the hospital.

"Craig (Gordon) is the one we're really worried about," said Hearts manager Robbie Neilson. "He's away to hospital and it doesn't look great but I'm not going to speculate on it.

"We'll wait and see over the next few days, but my thoughts are with him and hopefully it's not too bad.”

Gordon and Fletcher collided while both challenging for a loose ball. A pass from Dylan Levitt freed Fletcher down the middle of the pitch until he was met by the charging force of Gordon.

After the collision, the referee actually awarded a penalty to Dundee United. But while the referee did eventually overturn the decision after looking at VAR, all focus gravitated towards Gordon.

Gordon was carried off in immense distress after the challenge. Before the stomach churning incident, United were leading 2-1 thanks to goals from Fletcher and Levitt, scored either side of a strike from Hearts ace Michael Smith.

However, the away side managed to secure a late draw thanks to a 94th minute penalty from Lawrence Shankland. Unfortunately, the will be little joy in the Hearts end as all thoughts will turn to Gordon’s horrific injury so close to Christmas Day.
