Young Sheldon Season 6: How Mary & Brenda Working Together Impacts George

Warning! Spoilers ahead for Young Sheldon season 5.

Executive producer Steven Molaro explains how Brenda and Mary working together impacts George in Young Sheldon season 6. The Big Bang Theory spin-off ended its most recent season with a tamer finale. Instead of concluding any of the plotlines it had been tackling all year, the Young Sheldon season 5 finale mostly focused on Sheldon and his fear of the future.

Instead of delivering on any much-awaited payoff, CBS mainly used the Young Sheldon season 5 finale as a launching pad for what’s going to happen next for the Coopers. For George and Mary’s troubled marriage, that means more problems moving forward. After getting fired from their respective jobs, Mary was forced to go around town desperately looking for a new job. Ultimately, she ends up at the town bowling alley and essentially begs Brenda to hire her. Despite her initial skepticism given her and George’s relationship, Brenda relents, which means that in Young Sheldon season 6, George’s wife and his potential mistress will be working side-by-side together.

During an interview with TV Insider, Molaro is asked what fans can expect from this active narrative in Young Sheldon season 6. While he claims that he still isn’t fully sure where this plot is going, he shares that the creative team is well aware of how this could further complicate things for Mary and George. And regardless of how real Mary and Brenda’s working relationship turns out to be, it will put George in a difficult position. Read his full quote below:

I don’t have a clear plan that I can tell you but we are fully aware of the tension that exists now with Mary working with Brenda every day. And you can see it on George’s face when he hears the news that he’s not comfortable with this at all.

George and Brenda’s potential affair was the focus of Young Sheldon season 5’s earlier episodes, stemming from their flirtatious evening in the season 4 finale. While the pair hasn’t done anything wrong, technically, The Big Bang Theory spin-off made it clear that there’s a genuine attraction between them; it’s just that neither is acting on it. While Young Sheldon season 5 may have not offered the payoff that viewers were expecting with this arc, it seems like the intention is to play it out longer, perhaps leading to George’s eventual death. With two more seasons of Young Sheldon already guaranteed, CBS has more than enough time to tackle this narrative. This way, George and Mary’s marriage doesn’t get destroyed in an instant, but gradually over time.

Assuming that Mary retains her new job at the bowling alley with Brenda, then it will be interesting to see if she ever finds out about George’s relationship with her. It’s worth noting that after the Cooper patriarch suffered the small heart attack in the Young Sheldon season 4 finale, neither George nor Brenda told anyone what really happened that night. Meemaw had some suspicions, but she never found anything; otherwise, she would have already said something about it. Given this, expect that Young Sheldon season 6 will further delve into Brenda and George’s evolving relationship and how it impacts the Coopers.
