Mission: Impossible 7 Trailer Breakdown – 11 Story & Stunt Reveals

The first trailer for Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, aka Mission: Impossible 7, has been released, showcasing new story details, fresh stunts, familiar characters, and plenty of spy action. The film again stars Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, Ving Rhames as Luther Stickell, Simon Pegg as Benji Dunn, Rebecca Ferguson as Ilsa Faust, and Vanessa Kirby as White Widow.  New cast members include Hayley Atwell as Grace, Shea Whigham as Jasper Briggs, and unnamed characters played by Pom Klementieff, Esai Morales, Rob Delaney, Cary Elwes, Indira Varma, Mark Gatiss, Charles Parnell, Greg Tarzan Davis, and Frederick Schmidt. Also returning to the franchise is Henry Czerny as Eugene Kittridge, who was last seen in the first Mission: Impossible, released in 1996.

Written and directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Mission: Impossible 7 is the first part of a longer story that will continue into Mission: Impossible 8, which is currently filming and set to release in 2024. Initially slated for release in July 2021 and August 2022, the pandemic forced delays for both parts by two years. Now, images and footage are finally rolling out for the next entry in the Mission: Impossible franchise, including the first trailer that has a number of story, stunt, and character reveals teasing the future of the series.

The new Mission: Impossible -Dead Reckoning Part One trailer shows off Cruise’s Hunt back in action alongside his IMF team of Ilsa, Benji, and Luther, and facing off against a new threat that will no doubt upend his world. New faces to the franchise are featured throughout the trailer, including Klementieff and Morales as the new villains, as well as peeks at Elwes, Whigham, Varma, and Czerny as Kittridge. Once again, Hunt is faced with a difficult choice, which is par for the course in his IMF career, and it appears that the stakes are higher than ever. Here’s a breakdown of every reveal from the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One trailer.

Ethan Hunt And Kittridge Come Face-To-Face Again

The first time Cruise’s Hunt and Czerny’s Kittridge came face-to-face was in 1996’s Mission: Impossible, which had Kittridge suspecting Hunt of being a mole within the IMF. In the end, Hunt’s name was cleared, but Kittridge disappeared from the franchise altogether. Now, Czerny is back in the role as the trailer shows both characters face-t0-face again, with Kittridge telling Hunt that he must “pick a side.” It’s a contentious sequence and a great throwback to their last on-screen meeting, which will surely end in similar fashion. Hunt appears to be both angry and suspicious of Kittridge, and it sounds like he’s being given a choice between fighting against the government versus fighting for his ideals, a plight that Hunt has faced in every chapter of the Mission: Impossible franchise thus far.

Ethan Hunt And Ilsa In Love – Will Dead Reckoning Have Flashbacks?

After first appearing in 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa has been a main player in the franchise, often teased as a potential love interest for Hunt while also being his espionage equal. A British spy who has worked as a double agent and an assassin, Ilsa is formidable and dangerous, but that’s also her appeal to someone like Hunt. The trailer shows Hunt and Ilsa embracing lovingly, which is the natural progression of things after the end of Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which had Hunt find closure with his ex-wife, Julia, freeing him up to be with Ilsa. In the trailer for Dead Reckoning, Hunt and Ilsa are seen smiling and happy, but Ilsa is also shown at various points with blonde hair and an eye patch, at one point appearing to be in a physical confrontation with Hunt, suggesting that there may be flashbacks or massive time jumps in the film, as well as some potential double-crossing along the way.

Pom Klementieff Villain Role Revealed – Who She May Be Working For

Up until now, it was unclear what Klementieff’s role would be in Dead Reckoning, but it’s evident in the trailer that she is a villain, most likely an assassin of some sort. While her character remains unnamed at the moment, Klementieff is seen chasing Hunt and Atwell’s characters through Rome in a Humvee and fighting Hunt hand-to-hand in an underground enclosure. She’s also seen fighting multiple assailants on a train, as well as running atop one and jumping between cars. There’s not much context given in terms of who she may be working for, but Morales is billed as the main villain, and it’s likely that Klementieff is working for him in some capacity unless there’s another enemy that has yet to reveal itself, which is entirely possible with this franchise. Ultimately, Klementieff looks to be a relentless and dangerous force to be reckoned with.

Ethan Hunt On Horseback In The Desert – What He May Be After

The Mission: Impossible franchise has featured all manner of vehicles and stunts throughout the films but has yet to have anything on horseback until now. What appears to be a group of highly-trained agents riding on horseback to an encampment of some sort during a sandstorm reveals that Cruise is among the group. Also seen is Ilsa with blonde hair and an eyepatch, apparently shooting at the group from a concealed position within the encampment. The team infiltrates, and Cruise’s Hunt is seen confronting Ilsa, who is wearing a cross-shaped key around her neck. This appears to be a significant factor in Dead Reckoning as it pops up again in the trailer at a different time and place. This sequence also suggests either a flashback or time jump, as it contradicts the loving relationship between Ilsa and Hunt and has her character looking very different from her usual brunette appearance. Either way, it appears that she has what Hunt is after, which is likely the cross-shaped key around her neck.

Rebecca Ferguson’s Ilsa New Look – Will She Double Cross The IMF?

Ferguson’s dual looks as Ilsa in the trailer ultimately suggest that she’s got more going on than just helping Hunt and the IMF with a random mission. As is usually the case, Ilsa tends to get wrapped up in both sides, which ends up causing various rifts – and Dead Reckoning seems consistent with this character trait. Isla’s blonde hair and eye patch suggest that she’s attempting to hide her appearance, and the fact that Hunt appears to be chasing after her in the desert means she has something worth hiding (likely the cross-shaped key). In contrast, Isla is seen with dark hair working with the IMF in various other sequences in the trailer, eventually unsheathing a sword as she fights a knife-wielding Morales in Venice. With Ilsa being built up as a key character in the franchise (and a conflicted one at that), it seems plausible that she could be killed off in an effort to propel Cruise’s Hunt to seek revenge.

Esai Morales’ Unnamed Villain Is Fond Of Knives – Will He Kill An IMF Agent?

The first look at Esai Morales’ unnamed villainous character is shown in the Mission: Impossible 7 trailer, and it appears he has a thing for knives. No dialogue is spoken by the actor, nor is he given a name or motive as of yet, but his appearance is both menacing and deadly, and he looks to be a very determined individual throughout. At one point, he is seen wearing a suit and producing a knife to square off against Ilsa, armed with a sword. Later, he is seen in plainclothes aboard a train, then on top of it battling Hunt, knife in hand. It’s also worth noting that Ilsa doesn’t appear in any of the train footage, suggesting that she may well be injured or dead at that point.

Hayley Atwell’s Grace And Cruise’s Ethan Hunt On The Run In Rome

Atwell’s mysterious character named Grace, who has been called “a destructive force of nature” by McQuarrie, appears to be allied with Hunt for at least a portion of the film, but it’s unclear who she works for or whose side she may be on. Regardless, both Grace and Hunt are teamed up in a chase through Rome that has Klementieff’s character chasing them down in a Humvee. Hunt is seen using his “magic trick” (a nod to the first film) to show Grace that he is in possession of the cross-shaped key, which is likely what gets them in trouble, kicking off the chase sequence. Whatever the cross-shaped key is, it appears that everyone in Mission: Impossible 7 wants it and that it’s worth destroying Rome to get it.

The Mission: Impossible Franchise Goes Underwater Again

It’s already been reported that the franchise will feature not one but two submarine sequences for both Mission: Impossible 7 and Mission: Impossible 8, respectively. The new trailer shows the first tease of those sequences, which features an underwater explosion near a submarine, as well as a physical altercation with a man in a very intricate underwater suit. It’s likely this is Hunt, but since the character is completely covered up in the suit, it could really be anyone.

Gas Bomb Scene – Who Sets It Off And Why They Help Kittridge

At one point in the Mission: Impossible 7 trailer, an older man wearing a strange gas mask is seen inside what appears to be a government-style meeting room with Kittridge and other officials. Holding two small gas bombs, the man tosses them into the air, and they explode, seemingly knocking out everyone in the room. However, the same older man is seen handing Kittridge a box earlier in the trailer, and close inspection reveals that Kittridge is wearing a similar mask when the bombs go off, making him immune to their effect. The trailer also shows Kittridge and Hunt sitting in the same room talking, which suggests that the older man is likely Hunt in disguise, and the reason he gives Kittridge the mask is simple; he needs to talk to him alone and can’t do so any other way. It also shows that Hunt is once again on the outs with his agency, especially as Kittridge suggests that he may be on the wrong side.

Train Sequence Battle – All Aboard For Dead Reckoning’s Finale

The last time the Mission: Impossible franchise was aboard a train was during its 1996 debut – and Mission: Impossible 7 has more than a few throwbacks to that era. Multiple characters are seen aboard a train throughout the trailer, including Hunt, Grace, White Widow, and both Morales and Klementieff’s villains, suggesting that it will be stage for the film’s big finale, both inside the train and on top of it. Cruise and Morales’ characters are seen fighting atop the train at one point, as well as Grace dangling from the back of a car. In a different clip, a train engine is seen careening off the end of the tracks, which is likely a critical moment in Mission: Impossible 7. Cruise is seen wearing all-black fatigues throughout the train sequence, which relates to another massive stunt in the film involving a motorcycle jump.

Ethan Hunt Jumps A Cliff On A Motorcycle – Is This The Biggest Mission: Impossible Stunt Yet?

Throughout the new trailer, Cruise is seen in all-black fatigues riding a motorcycle in the Alps before reaching the crescendo at the end, where he launches off a mountain on the bike, wearing a parachute. This stunt reportedly took an immense amount of preparation and was the first sequence filmed for the Mission: Impossible sequel on account of the dangerous conditions needed to make it a reality. It serves as the highlight stunt of the film, similar to previous entries that had Cruise doing everything from climbing the Burj Khalifa to being strapped to the outside of an aircraft as it took off. The context of the stunt, however, is likely the means by which Hunt reaches the train for the finale, as he’s wearing the same outfit and is later seen atop the train (as well as on the side of it), suggesting that he’ll parachute and land on the train after the jump, making the stunt even wilder than what was shown in the Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One trailer.
