Mary Elizabeth Winstead Reportedly Cast As Hera Syndulla in ‘Star Wars: Ashoka’ Series

Earlier this year, news first broke from The Hollywood Reporter that actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead (“Harley Quinn: Birds of Prey,” “Kate,” “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World”) had been cast in the upcoming “Star Wars” television series, “Ahsoka,” in an undisclosed role. Now, it looks like there is word on who Winstead is portraying in the series, as the live-action debut of the spaceship Ghost captain, Hera Syndulla, for the new “Star Wars” series, per Bespin Bulletin.

Mary Elizabeth Winstead Joins ‘Ahsoka’ As Hera Syndulla

It was previously revealed in a trailer for the show that debuted earlier this year at Star Wars Celebration that Captain Hera Syndulla would be appearing in the series. However, it was only a rear image of the character, so attendees did not get to see who was portraying the iconic heroine. Lucasfilm has also not yet confirmed Winstead’s casting in the series.

Winstead is expected to appear in the show opposite Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano and Natasha Liu Bordizzo as the Mandalorian, Sabine Wren. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Eman Esfandi is also in the cast as Jedi and former Ghost crew member Ezra Bridger.

The upcoming series appears to be a live-action continuation of sorts of the CG-animated series, “Star Wars Rebels.” That show ended with an epilogue featuring an older Sabine and Ahsoka Tano reuniting in order to find their lost friend, Ezra Bridger. When fans last saw Ezra Bridger, they blasted off through lightspeed to unknown reaches of the galaxy, along with space-faring, whale-like creatures called Purrgils.

Ezra was not alone, with the imperial leader Grand Admiral Thrawn in the clutches of a Purrgil tentacle. When fans saw Ahsoka Tano again in Season 2 of “The Mandalorian,” now portrayed in live-action by Dawson, she was searching for Thrawn.

The “Ahsoka” series would mark the live-action debut of the Hera Syndulla character. She has previously been voiced across various “Star Wars” animated productions by Vanessa Marshall. The show will also mark the live-action debuts of Sabine Wren, voiced in “Rebels” by Tiya Sircar, and Ezra Bridger, voiced in “Rebels” by Taylor Gray.”

Another interesting “Star Wars” connection for Winstead is that she is married to Ewan McGregor, the longtime live actor for Obi-Wan Kenobi. McGregor recently reprised his role as Kenobi in the live-action “Obi-Wan Kenobi” miniseries on Disney+.

As reported by The Blast, McGregor and Winstead were married earlier this year. The two met on the set of television’s “Fargo” in 2016 while they were both previously married to other people. They began a relationship the following year and welcomed their first child, son Laurie, in June 2021.

“Ahsoka” will be set after the fall of the Empire. The series will follow former Jedi Knight Ahsoka Tano as she investigates a new threat to a vulnerable galaxy. The series will debut later in 2023 and will be available exclusively on Disney+.

“Ahsoka” is executive produced by Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau. Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, Carrie Beck, and Karen Gilchrist are serving as co-executive producers for the series.
