Cricket star Rishabh Pant has been involved in a fireball crash after reportedly dozing off at the wheel and flipping his car.

The India wicketkeeper lost control of his car after falling asleep, according to local police, before hitting a central reservation and causing the vehicle to flip twice and catch on fire.

Local reports say that Pant suffered injuries to the head, back and leg in the incident, which occurred between Mangalaur and Nursan, near his hometown of Roorkee in northern India.

Pant is now understood to be in a stable condition in hospital, although the local police superintendent has revealed he is "lucky to be alive".

According to The Times of India, Swapn Kishor Singh explained: "Pant sustained injuries on his forehead, a hand and right knee. However, he is conscious and able to talk. The car he was driving was completely burnt. He is lucky to survive the severe accident."

Photographs from after the crash show the charred and twisted remains of Pant's Mercedes SUV in the centre of the road. Meanwhile, he can be seen covered in blood being helped by locals in footage from the scene.

Singh added: "Hearing a loud sound of the accident, nearby villagers along with the local cops, rushed to the spot and pulled him out the car. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital from where he was referred to a major hospital in Dehradun."

The secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, Jay Shah, provided an update on Twitter, writing: “Rishabh is stable and undergoing scans.

"I have spoken to his family and the doctors treating him. We are closely monitoring his progress and will provide him with all the necessary support.”

Pant has also received a message from his Delhi Capitals coach Ricky Ponting, the former Australia captain wished him a speedy recovery by tweeting: “Hope you're on the mend and back on your feet soon.”

The 25-year-old cricketer has played 33 tests, 30 one-day internationals and 66 Twenty20 matches for India and was part of the side that completed a 2-0 Test series victory over Bangladesh on Sunday.
