Jets’ Zach Wilson to start vs. Jaguars with Mike White not cleared for contact

New York Jets quarterback Zach Wilson has another chance to impress coaches and silence critics this week.

As noted by Rich Cimini of ESPN, head coach Robert Saleh confirmed Tuesday that Wilson will start for a second straight game over the injured Mike White when the 7-7 Jets host the 6-8 Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday night. White suffered fractures to his ribs in a loss at the Buffalo Bills on Dec. 11 and still hasn’t been cleared for contact.

Saleh demoted Wilson from QB1 to third-string and scout-team duties from Week 12 through Week 14 but then planned for the second-year pro to serve as White’s primary backup for this past Sunday’s contest against the Detroit Lions.

Wilson ultimately received the nod over the medically-benched White versus Detroit and completed 18-of-35 pass attempts for 317 yards with two touchdowns and an interception in the 20-17 defeat that damaged Gang Green’s playoff hopes.

The Jets will enter Thursday ninth in the overall AFC standings. They trail the 7-7 New England Patriots via head-to-head matchups and sit beneath the 8-6 Miami Dolphins and 8-6 Los Angeles Chargers in a battle over two playoff spots. Cimini pointed out that ESPN analytics say New York has only a 13% chance of qualifying for the postseason tournament.

White’s status beyond Thursday is unknown, but the result of the upcoming prime-time game likely will impact who Saleh starts at quarterback when the Jets play at the Seattle Seahawks (7-7) on Jan. 1.

If Wilson is unimpressive in a win over Jacksonville, getting White medically cleared should be New York’s main goal through the middle of next week. However, Wilson probably should get additional reps if he flips a figurative switch against the Jaguars or if the Jets begin the new year at 7-8.
