Police have claimed that the 25-year-old was driving Mercedes SUV when it crashed in the northern state of Uttarakhand after he had lost control after ‘falling asleep at the wheel’.

“Pant had told the local police that he lost control on his car after he dozed off for a couple of seconds. The police is investigating the case,” Uttarakhand Director General of Police Ashok Kumar said.

They added that the car flipped over twice before bursting into flames, with photographs showing the charred remains of the vehicle.

The wicketkeeper-batsman was left with multiple injures and was rushed to a hospital in Roorkee before being moved to a more advanced facility in Dehradun.

A statement from the secretary of the Board of Control for Cricket in India said: “Rishabh has two cuts on his forehead, a ligament tear in his right knee and has also hurt his right wrist, ankle, toe and has suffered abrasion injuries on his back.

“Rishabh’s condition remains stable, and he has now been shifted to Max Hospital, Dehradun, where he will undergo MRI scans to ascertain the extent of his injuries and formulate his further course of treatment.”

Pant is one of the main figures in both the Indian national team and Indian Premier League side, the Delhi Capitals. He also played in India’s recent 2-0 test match win against Bangladesh earlier this month.

He was set to be included in the squad for their upcoming Twenty20 and ODI squads for matches against Sri Lanka next month, however his injuries mean he is more than likely set to miss out.
