Tom Hiddleston Reacts To Loki's Drinking Song Making Global Music Charts

Tom Hiddleston shares his response to Loki‘s drinking song making global music charts. Hiddleston reprised his fan-favorite role in the Disney+ series last year after appearing in several Marvel Cinematic Universe films. Loki follows a different version of the character who escaped with the Tesseract during Avengers: EndgameThe series introduces audiences to the TVA, as well as other Loki variants. Of these, Sylvie plays the biggest role as a scene-stealing foil who comes to develop a complex relationship with Loki.

Loki season 1 received a positive response from critics and audiences alike, with a season 2 announcement coming during the final episode’s credits. Episode 3, titled “Lamentis,” arguably generated the most buzz thanks to its character building and impressive visuals. The episode follows Loki and Sylvie as they attempt to escape the title moon before its destroyed. A key sequence finds the two characters aboard a train. Loki confirms he’s bisexual, in a long-overdue and widely celebrated moment of representation. Loki also memorably sings a catchy drinking song, with many of the train’s passengers joining in. Titled “Very Full,” the song debuted at #10 on Billboard‘s World Digital Song Sales chart soon after the release of “Lamentis.”

In an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, Hiddleston and Kimmel discussed the song, with Hiddleston mentioning it was written especially for the show. The actor also shared Loki’s song was written in Norwegian since the character is a Norse god. Kimmel asked for Hiddleston’s reaction to the song hitting the world music chart. The actor said:

Amazing, completely unprecedented. That’s never happened, didn’t see that coming…I hope in Norway that they weren’t offended by the fact that I was butchering their native tongue.

It speaks to the song’s charms, as well as Hiddleston’s performance, that “Very Full” stood out in such a big episode. Though the show’s version of Loki is arguably a bit more serious than his original counterpart, the drinking song showcases the lighter side of his character in an unexpected way. It’s also the sort of moment there likely wouldn’t be time for in a movie, showing how Marvel made the most of Loki‘s episodic format. It makes sense viewers enjoyed the song enough to help it chart as high as it did.

Of course, Loki isn’t the only Marvel Disney+ show to feature a breakout song; WandaVision‘s “Agatha All Along” made the Billboard chart as well and even won an Emmy for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics. The two hit songs are good examples of the MCU trying out new things with its Disney+ series. Hopefully, it’s a trend that will continue in the remainder of Phase 4 and beyond.
