Ric Flair Speaks Out On Wrestling Hulk Hogan During SummerSlam Weekend

Earlier this week, rumors surfaced that WWE Hall of Famer Ric Flair would be squaring off against Hulk Hogan at Starrcast V for his last ever match, and The Nature Boy has addressed those rumblings. Flair hasn’t wrestled on television since losing to Sting—who is involved in AEW himself—on TNA IMPACT on September 12, 2011. Now he’s set to come out of retirement for one more bout at the age of 73.

Flair is regarded by many as one of the greatest professional wrestlers of all time, and his choice to come out of retirement one more time has raised a lot of questions. Fans are worried about his health, of course, but that hasn’t stopped them from snapping up tickets for Starrcast V as they become available. Taking place on the same weekend as SummerSlam, “the Woodstock of Professional Wrestling” will feature The Roast of Ric Flair as well as his last wrestling match. Fans are also curious about who Flair will be coming out of retirement to wrestle, and he’s addressed the buzz that it would be Hulk Hogan.

Speaking on his own podcast, Ric Flair To Be The Man, The Dirtiest Player In The Game had this to say about working with Hogan when asked by host Conrad Thompson if that was the case: “Not that I know. I think you would have run that by me… He’s invited. I’ve talked to him personally to come to the roast and come watch the match. But yeah, he hasn’t confirmed for sure but I’m pretty sure he’ll be there.” (h/t to WrestlingNews.co for the transcription)

These comments will naturally lead to fans wondering if this is all part of some kind of work. Especially since it sounds like Hogan could very well be at Starrcast V anyway. Flair’s final match is under the Jim Crockett Promotions banner, so it’d be somewhat fitting for the promoters to tease and hem and haw before revealing what is actually going down at the event. Attendees already know that FTR will be on the side of the Nature Boy, while the Rock N’ Roll Express is in need of one more man to complete the three-on-three tag-team bout.

That mystery partner will continue to generate speculation online and in the dirt sheets, and not naming the opponent now is a stroke of genius from someone who ought to know in Flair. He’s built up more than his fair share of feuds and matches, and this could be one last masterstroke. Don’t expect the Hogan rumblings to go away until a sixth man is actually announced, either. The nature of the wrestling business always means that fans could be getting worked, even when it comes to a 73-year-old fighting a 68-year-old in the middle of the squared circle on a hot Sunday night in Nashville.
