Morbius Honest Trailer Mocks Endless Delays & Weak MCU Connections

Morbius continues to take a beating as the latest episode of Screen Junkies‘ Honest Trailer series takes aim at the panned movie and its endless delays. The latest installment in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe introduced Michael Morbius, a brilliant scientist suffering from a rare blood disorder who afflicts himself with a form of transgenic vampirism to cure himself, to the big screen. Morbius subsequently gains superhuman abilities, including all of the strengths of traditional vampires, without any of the superstitious weaknesses, save for a thirst for blood, forcing him to find a way to fix this curse before it’s too late.

Jared Leto led the cast of Morbius as the titular protagonist alongside Matt Smith, Adria Arjona, Jared Harris, Al Madrigal and Tyrese Gibson. Michael Keaton also made a cameo appearance in the film’s mid-credits sequence, reprising his role of Adrian Toomes/Vulture from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as he lands in the SSU due to Doctor Strange’s multiverse spell seen in Spider-Man: No Way Home. Hitting theaters this past April, Morbius was widely panned by critics for its lackluster script, dated storytelling and confused universe connections.

On the heels of the film arriving on digital platforms, the latest episode of Screen Junkies‘ Honest Trailer series is swooping down to tackle Morbius. The video hilariously points out the panned SSU movie’s endless release delays, bland supporting characters, poor writing and forced MCU ties. Check out the funny new episode below:

After languishing in development hell for two decades, Morbius found itself fast-tracked in 2018 when the Tom Hardy-led Venom proved to be a box office hit despite poor reviews from critics, with Sony eager to capitalize on its library of Spider-Man-related characters it held the rights to. Despite this, Morbius would see its release date frequently delayed by the studio, initially shuffling around Summer 2020 to various points in 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. This release date shuffle would even see Sony elect to release Venom: Let There Be Carnage prior to Morbius, despite initial plans for the reverse.

As the latest Honest Trailer humorously points out, Morbius‘ endless release delays weren’t the end of the film’s problems as its dull screenplay, uninteresting roster of supporting characters and poor visual effects would see it lambasted by critics as the worst the SSU has delivered yet. Star Al Madrigal has since come to the film’s defense, arguing that the original cut of Morbius was far better than what was released and that the various delays resulted in far too many edits cutting down valuable material, including a completely different ending. Audiences can decide for themselves how they feel about Morbius as it is now available to rent or purchase on digital platforms and hits shelves on 4K Ultra-HD, Blu-ray and DVD on June 14.
