Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of the most distinguished Star Wars characters, and it's worth figuring out just how old he is during the events of his TV show.

How Old Obi-Wan Kenobi Is In His Star Wars Show

Obi-Wan Kenobi is one of Star Wars’ most enduring characters, but there remains a need for some clarification about exactly how old he is during the Disney+ series Obi-Wan Kenobi. Famously, Obi-Wan has been played by three different actors onscreen since his first appearance, in the original Star Wars. In that movie, he was played by Alec Guinness, who returned for fleeting appearances in the sequels The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

When George Lucas decided to bring the prequels to the screen, starting with Star Wars: Episode I –  The Phantom Menace, he cast Ewan McGregor to play a younger incarnation of Obi-Wan Kenobi. The character was a pivotal part of the prequel trilogy, which continued with Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Since then, Obi-Wan has been voiced by James Arnold Taylor in Genndy Tartakovsky’s 2D-animated Star Wars: Clone Wars and the 3D-animation series Star Wars: The Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels.

The character’s subsequent return to live-action in Obi-Wan Kenobi has also heralded the return of Ewan McGregor to a role he once resented. The actor’s evident excitement at being able to work with Hayden Christensen again has been good to see, and it suggests that time has been kinder to McGregor than it has been to the character he is portraying in the Obi-Wan Kenobi show. The Jedi icon certainly appears to be a man struggling with the trauma of all that’s been lost since the end of the Clone Wars, with the 10-year time jump making Obi-Wan around 48 years old when the Disney+ series takes place.

How Old Obi-Wan Kenobi Is When He Dies

Details of Obi-Wan Kenobi’s age can be worked out because according to Star Wars canon he was born in 57 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin). He attained the rank of Jedi Knight following his defeat of Darth Maul during the Battle of Naboo in 32 BBY when he was 25 years old. Additionally, the events of Revenge of the Sith and the end of the Clone Wars and the Republic all took place in 19 BBY, when he was 38. His death at the hands of Darth Vader was, of course, aboard the Death Star in 0 BBY when he was 57 and occurred immediately after seeing that he had managed to reunite the Skywalker twins, Luke and Leia, for the first time in 19 years.

How Long Obi-Wan Kenobi Was A Jedi For

Remarkably, Obi-Wan Kenobi was taken from his home on Stewjon as a baby and brought to the Jedi Temple on Coruscant within the first six months of his life. This underlines the extreme youth of Force-sensitive children when the Jedi began training them and may also help explain Obi-Wan’s complete devotion to the Order and their way of life. It might clarify why he couldn’t leave, despite his love for the Mandalorian Duchess Satine Kryze or the dispute he had with the Jedi Council about training young Anakin Skywalker following the death of Qui-Gon Jinn. In spite of the many trials and tribulations of his life, more of which are set to be revealed in Obi-Wan Kenobi, he did not stray from the path, and for at least 56 years, he proved himself to be one of the greatest Jedi in history.
