2023 Oscars Predictions: BAFTA Longlists Bring Unpredictability Heading Into AMPAS Nomination Voting

Variety Awards Circuit section is the home for all awards news and related content throughout the year, featuring the following: the official predictions for the upcoming Oscars, Emmys, Grammys and Tony awards ceremonies, curated by Variety senior awards editor Clayton Davis. The prediction pages are Davis’ assessment of the current standings of the race and do not reflect personal preferences for any film or performance. Like any organization or body that votes, each category is fluid and subject to change. Predictions are updated every Thursday.

Awards commentary: The BAFTA longlists were released where notable contenders and names were missing from the organization that substantially overlaps with AMPAS. James Cameron’s “Avatar: The Way of Water” was missing from best film and director, which could be a sign of trouble heading into phase one voting.

Steven Spielberg was also shockingly absent from the director longlist. While a film in the modern era hasn’t won the top award at BAFTA without a best director nomination, Spielberg’s chances for receiving an Oscar nod still seem intact. It’s worth noting this category isn’t entirely juried, the top five men and top five women received automatic spots on the longlist, with the last six spots being determined by a jury.

SAG and DGA nods are coming this week, along with the Golden Globes and Critics Choice ceremonies. Stay tuned for more drama.

We seem to be flying towards a “Top Gun: Maverick” victory with Tom Cruise entering the top five for best actor and Variety being the first outlet to include Joseph Kosinski in the top five for directing back in early December. Inpidual category pages will be updated before Thursday, Jan. 12, but you can see the new predictions (in alphabetical order), with the predicted winners marked accordingly.
