Moon Knight Producer Hopes Oscar Isaac Will Return to the MCU
Grant Curtis, one of the producers of the Marvel Cinematic Universe series Moon Knight, hopes that Oscar Isaac returns to play the role again.

One of the producers of Moon Knight has expressed his hopes that Oscar Isaac will want to return to play the character in a future Marvel Cinematic Universe project. The series, which also stars Ethan Hawke, F. Murray Abraham, May Calamawy, and Gaspard Ulliel, premiered on Disney+ on March 30, 2022, and ran for six episodes until its finale on May 5. The show introduced a brand new hero to the MCU with its titular character. Moon Knight is the mantle taken on by American mercenary Marc Spector, who has dissociative identity disorder and sometimes exhibits the personality of mild-mannered British museum shop clerk Steven Grant. He gets his powers by channeling the might of the Egyptian moon god Khonshu.

One of the most intriguing elements of Moon Knight is the fact that, while it takes place in the MCU (even referencing Madripoor and Black Panther‘s Ancestral Plane), it doesn’t feature any crossover characters from other branches of the franchise. Although it seems unlikely that this will be the last fans see of the brand new hero, there are currently no official plans for him to return, unlike Disney+’s other new hero, Kamala Khan from the upcoming Miss Marvel, who is already set to appear in the Captain Marvel sequel The Marvels in 2023. That, combined with the fact that Isaac was only contracted for the six-episode series, has made fans a little worried about whether or not Marc Spector and Steven Grant will make another appearance in the MCU.

During the press day for the Moon Knight finale, THR had the opportunity to sit down with show producer Grant Curtis. When he was asked if Isaac would be making any further appearances, he was somewhat cagey but honest. While he admits he can’t speak about the business side of things, he expressed hope, saying that “I can’t wait to see if it happens.” Read his full quote below:

As you can imagine, I can’t speak to the business affairs of it all, but I can say that Oscar gives such a compelling performance as Marc Spector, Steven Grant and Jake Lockley. The audience becomes so emotionally engaged in the journey that Oscar takes us on, and I hope that journey extends. It’s a great question for Kevin about where this character may or may not land, but the way we leave Moon Knight at the end of this series, the character has the potential to flow nicely into many corners of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. And if Oscar wouldn’t have committed to the degree that he did and create such an engaging, organic performance, we probably wouldn’t be saying that. We’d say, “Yes, maybe,” you know? But no, we’re saying, “I can’t wait to see if it happens,” and that is a testament to an actor working at the top of their craft.

Curtis is right that there are many corners of the MCU where Moon Knight could potentially pop up again. Unfortunately, the series that is probably most perfect for a reappearance is Secret Invasion, the Disney+ show that will be reteaming Nick Fury and Maria Hill. That series will be taking place primarily in Europe, which would be geographically convenient for the Steven Grant personality. But it is already filming so it’s highly unlikely that Isaac would make an appearance that hasn’t already been at least teased.

But really the best place for a Moon Knight reprisal would be a second season of the series. However, even if they greenlight season 2, Marvel probably won’t be able to resist finally allowing the hero to mix with some of their more established characters first. To that end, he would probably be able to appear in one of the films that are earlier in pre-production and not yet on the schedule, like the next Spider-Man movie, Fantastic Four, or even Blade.
