Cobra Kai Season 5 Trailer Breakdown: 8 Story & Character Reveals
The Cobra Kai season 5 trailer confirms speculations but also hints at interesting twists. Here's a breakdown of every story and character reveal.

Netflix has finally revealed when Cobra Kai season 5 releases and also provided a first look at what is coming next for the show. Taking many by surprise, Netflix has not only confirmed that the Karate Kid sequel series is returning on September 9, 2022, but has also shown what can be considered Cobra Kai season 5’s first trailer. Unlike season 4, which was released a year after the premiere of season 3, Cobra Kai season 5 will arrive on Netflix just nine months after the Cobra Kai season 4 finale.

Paying off what had been set up throughout its ten episodes, Cobra Kai season 4 brought all of its major storylines together via the All Valley Karate Tournament. However, the competition results were not the best for the show’s main characters. Sam lost her match against Tory, Robby had to see Kenny go down the wrong path, the Cobra Kai dojo was the overall champion, and Miguel quit the tournament and went to Mexico to find his father.

These narrative beats are now confirmed to be important elements for the next chapter of the saga, as the Cobra Kai season 5 trailer heavily focused on how Terry Silver is expanding Cobra Kai and on Johnny’s search for Miguel. In addition to the already expected plotlines, such as Daniel and Chozen teaming up against Silver, the Cobra Kai trailer also revealed some interesting twists, such as Robby’s role in Cobra Kai season 5. Here’s a breakdown of the major moments in the Cobra Kai season 5 trailer.

Kreese Is Nowhere To Be Seen

For a character that has been Cobra Kai‘s main villain since season 2, it is interesting that John Kreese did not appear in the Cobra Kai season 5 trailer except for the recap. However, after the events of Cobra Kai season 4, which saw Kreese going to jail, the character will likely take the back seat during season 5. While Kreese can never be disregarded as a major player, Cobra Kai season 5 looks to have installed Terry Silver as its big bad, with Kreese instead assumed to be in jail.

Miyagi-Do Is Closed

Daniel and Johnny’s bet with Kreese involved the loser stopping teaching karate. Even so, following Cobra Kai’s victory at the All Valley, Daniel mentioned in front of Mr. Miyagi’s tombstone that he could not honor the deal he made with his rival. However, the Cobra Kai season 5 trailer reveals that Daniel has indeed closed Miyagi-Do – at least publicly. This has major implications for Cobra Kai season 5, as Daniel and Chozen will not be able to train their disciples in an official capacity nor accept new students.

However, the fact that Miyagi-Do is closed does not mean that Daniel will give up the fight. LaRusso and Chozen are seen standing up against Silver, meaning that they will try to work around Miyagi-Do closing somehow. Daniel may continue to teach Miyagi-Do secretly, at least to his closest students like Sam, Demitri, and Hawk, setting up an interesting new dynamic between Daniel and his potential students in Cobra Kai season 5.

Terry Silver’s Cobra Kai Franchise Has Taken Over The Valley

30 years after Karate Kid 3, Terry Silver appears to have finally achieved his goal of taking over the Valley with Cobra Kai karate. Following his team’s win at the tournament, Silver seems to be investing heavily in new Cobra Kai dojos in the region – all with top-notch structures and backed by a strong marketing campaign. If there is one thing Silver knows how to do, it is create a successful business – even if it’s based on toxic waste disposal – and it will be tough for Daniel to face the power and the money of his longtime foe.

Daniel And Chozen Are Working Together

That Daniel and Chozen would team up was already known, but the Cobra Kai season 5 trailer offers a better insight into exactly how this will happen. At no point is Chozen shown to be a sensei to any of Daniel’s students, but the former Karate Kid 2 villain is at least backing up Daniel in his confrontations against Silver. Chozen is more experienced in Miyagi-Do than Daniel, but he is also way less peaceful than his karate cousin. As perfectly stated in the Cobra Kai season 5 trailer, Chozen is the “gasoline” to this newly formed duo.

Silver Is Repeating His Quicksilver Method With Tory

The Cobra Kai season 5 trailer also makes a great callback to Terry Silver’s original role in Karate Kid 3. The trailer quickly switches between a flashback of Silver teaching Daniel the Quicksilver method to a scene from Cobra Kai season 5 with Tory being taught the same. During a few moments of Cobra Kai season 4, Silver had already recited his karate postulates, but it looks like he is now actually teaching the Karated Kid 3 Quicksilver method to a student.

Robby Goes To Mexico With Johnny

Perhaps the biggest surprise of the Cobra Kai season 5 trailer was the revelation that Robby is heading to Mexico along with Johnny. The end of Cobra Kai season 4 saw Robby trying to start over with his father, and now this will be carried onto Cobra Kai season 5. However, it seems that Robby was not fully aware of what the point of the road trip was: finding Miguel and bringing him back home. Considering that Robby and Miguel have one of Cobra Kai‘s biggest rivalries, bringing Robby along will likely prove a challenge for Johnny in Mexico.

Tory Isn’t Happy With Her Victory

The Cobra Kai season 5 trailer also shows Tory contemplating her All-Valley trophy with a sad look. At the end of Cobra Kai season 4, Tory found out that Terry Silver had bought the tournament referee – which takes a lot away from her win against Sam. However, it doesn’t seem like that was enough to make Torry immediately leave Cobra Kai, as she is seen training with Silver in the season 5 trailer.

Miguel And Robby Fight Back Home

The Cobra Kai season 5 trailer reveals that a major rematch is coming: Miguel vs. Robby. This will be the first time since the school fight that Robby and Miguel will face each other, and once again, it will not be by tournament rules. The most curious thing is that the fight between Robby and Miguel shown in the trailer is happening in front of Miguel’s Reseda apartment. In other words, it is already confirmed that Miguel manages to return home during Cobra Kai season 5.
