Bernie Ecclestone has revealed he once received an 'unusual' invitation to join a former Formula 1 champion on his honeymoon. Ecclestone is one of the most divisive figures in the sport, having formerly run the F1 setup.

A documentary on Discovery+ titled 'Lucky!' has delved into the former F1 chief executive's whirlwind life both in and out of the sport. One anecdote that caught the eye of many in the production, was the bizarre invite he received from ex-driver Jochen Rindt.

Rindt was a succesful Austrian driver who was crowned F1 world champion back in 1970 whilst driving for Lotus Ford, but his story and world title triumph was a tragic one.

Four races before the end of the 1970 season, the Austrian was involved in a fatal crash at the famous Monza track in Italy. Despite his death, Rindt had done enough to secure the world championship.

Three years prior to his title triumph, the Austrian driver married his fashion-icon wife Nina in 1967. After tying the knot the Rindt pair headed off for the honeymoon, but with two special guests.

Speaking on his new Discovery+ documentary Ecclestone revealed he and his then partner Tuana Tan were invited and joined the Rindt's on their honeymoon. He said: "When Jochen [Rindt] found Nina, she was a gorgeous, gorgeous, gorgeous girl.

"And they decided they ought to get married. I was invited along with Tuana, the girl I was with at the time, on the honeymoon, which I suppose is a bit unusual. I think basically it’s because Jochen and I could play Gin Rummy."

In the documentary, Ecclestone also discussed another F1 champion in seven-time winner Lewis Hamilton. The Englishman has announced himself as a legend of the sport during his time at Mercedes, and the former CEO revealed he nearly played a huge role in Hamilton's move to the Silver Arrows.

Admitting he was willing to contribute part of the fee to get Hamilton to drive for Mercedes, he said: "Niki [Lauda] realised what a valuable driver Lewis was, and he found some way of persuading him (Lewis Hamilton) he should be driving for Mercedes.

"If he didn't get paid what he wanted, Lewis, he wasn't going to agree. So I said 'well he's somebody that I think Mercedes needs, I'll pay the difference.' But eventually Mercedes paid."
