Who Is Stellan Skarsgard Playing In Star Wars' Andor Show?

The heavily anticipated release of Andor‘s very first trailer has finally given Star Wars fans a look at the upcoming Rogue One prequel, including the character being played by Stellan Skarsgard. Swedish screen legend Stellan Skarsgard was first announced for the ambitious Disney+ series Andor in 2020, but as is tradition for the studio, LucasFilm has kept virtually every aspect of the project quietly under wraps during production, with Andor‘s new trailer providing key information on what to expect from the rise of the Rebellion.

Skarsgard has been acting for more than five decades, but at 70 years old the Emmy-nominated star shows no signs of slowing down any time soon. In fact, since 2011 he has reinvented his career for a whole new generation of movie-goers with the role of Dr. Erik Selvig in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Thor franchise, in addition to appearances in The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. More recently, Skarsgard played Baron Harkonnen in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, and will return for Dune: Part Two in 2023.

Given the massive inspiration that Frank Herbert’s original Dune novels played in George Lucas’ creation of the Star Wars universe, it’s fitting that Stellan Skarsgard will finally make the jump to a galaxy far, far away with his upcoming role in Andor. Skarsgard will play a Rebel leader named Luther Rand [we are still seeking confirmation on this name], a brand new character to the Star Wars universe during a period of time that will explore the rise of the Rebellion. While the specifics of his character and arc are unknown, showrunner Tony Gilroy confirmed at Star Wars Celebration 2022 that Skarsgard will play a “huge role” in the series.

For Skarsgard, who has been acting since before the release of A New Hope in 1977, this will be his first venture into the wide world of Star Wars. It was actually the 2016 release of Rogue One that first caught his eye. The actor previously stated (via The Daily Beast), “I’ve had children in five decades, which means you’ve seen all the Star Wars films—and seen all the toys as well. But when I saw Rogue One, it had much more atmosphere and seemed a little more mature…” Skarsgard also confirmed that Rogue One writer Tony Gilroy being attached to Andor as showrunner was a big part of the reason why he was interested in doing the project, in addition to reuniting with his old friend, Diego Luna, who plays the movie and show’s protagonist Cassian Andor.

Andor season 1 will consist of 12 episodes and make its debut on streaming service Disney+ on August 31, 2022. While more details about Stellan Skarsgard’s Rebel leader character will likely come to light in the months leading up to the show’s hotly-anticipated premiere, Andor’s stellar cast and brand new teaser trailer will have to be enough to satiate excited fans in the meantime. Skarsgard and Diego Luna will be joined by Fiona Shaw, Adria Arjona, Denise Gough and Kyle Soller, with Genevieve O’Reilly and Forest Whitaker also reprising their previous Star Wars roles of Rebel Alliance co-founder Mon Mothma and Clone Wars veteran Saw Gerrera, respectively.
