Star Wars Drops ‘Andor’ Trailer, Confirms Release Date And Second Season

On Thursday, Star Wars Celebration kicked off with a bang in Anaheim, California. The annual fan event is giving fans a lot of updates about what is going on in a galaxy far, far away, including the new “Andor” series.

The upcoming Disney+ series is a prequel to 2016’s “Rogue One,” which saw Rebel Cassian Andor, played by Diego Luna, give his life for the Rebellion. The series will explore exactly how Cassian ends up in that situation after being recruited by Mon Mothma.

On Thursday afternoon, the official Star Wars Twitter account posted the video for fans who were not able to attend the Celebration in California.

“Watch the brand-new teaser trailer for #Andor, streaming August 31 on @DisneyPlus,” they wrote in the caption.

If that wasn’t good enough, fans are going to get not one, but two episodes on August 31. Showrunner Tony Gilroy revealed that 12 episodes have been planned for the first season and twelve episodes are planned for a second season. Filming for “Andor” season 2 is scheduled to start shooting this fall.

Gilroy revealed that the second season will cover the four-year gap that takes place before the film and lead directly into the events of “Rogue One” with its final scene, so it sounds like fans can safely assume that the show will not be getting a third season.

Tony Gilroy Says Cassian Andor Is ‘Kind Of A Mess’ In New Series

In a conversation with Vanity Fair, “Andor” showrunner Tony Gilroy teased that the first season of the upcoming Star Wars series will explore how and why Cassian decided to give his life to retrieve the Death Star plans from Scarif to help the Rebellion take down the Empire.

During the conversation, Gilroy described Luna’s character of Cassian Andor as someone who is “really revolution-averse, and cynical, and lost, and kind of a mess.”

Although the series focuses on Cassian’s life, Gilroy hinted that the show will start off with the destruction of Cassian’s homeworld before catching up with him as an adult.

“His adopted home will become the base of our whole first season, and we watch that place become radicalized,” Gilroy told the publication. “Then we see another planet that’s completely taken apart in a colonial kind of way. The Empire is expanding rapidly. They’re wiping out anybody who’s in their way.”

Vanity Fair also took a look at Genevieve O’Reilly’s character, who will reprise her role as Mon Mothma, head of the Rebellion, for “Andor.” Her story is reported to run “parallel” to Cassian’s story, which will touch on how Cassian ultimately became one of her key agents. Gilroy teased, “It is a huge, orchestral, Dickensian ensemble cast.”

Fans can look forward to the first two episodes of “Andor” when they debut on August 31 on Disney+. It sounds like fans can look forward to season 2 sometime in 2023.
