‘Japanese Breakfast’ Frontwoman Michelle Zauner Announces Book Tour For Award-Winning Memoir!

Zauner, 33, released her memoir “Crying In H Mart” nearly two years ago, and the bittersweet tale of Zauner’s relationship with her late mother, left an incredibly strong impression!
“Crying In H Mart” has won multiple Goodreads choice awards, including the 2021 Goodreads Choice Awards Best Memoir and Autobiography.
Zauner’s memoir chronicling her mother’s cancer diagnosis and how she learned how to process profound loss has resonated greatly with readers and music fans. The “Be Sweet” singer announced a pivotal milestone for “Crying In H Mart” on Twitter Friday morning, turning a chapter in the book’s legacy.

Zauner’s family is from Korea. A pivotal part of how she was able to get closer to her family’s roots largely revolved around her time spent in the Asian supermarket chain, H Mart. After her mother passed, Zauner found herself grieving in the aisles of H Marts.
Zauner’s relationship with her mother revolved largely around cooking; she is frank about how her relationship with food lead to emotional eating.
“When I was growing up with a Caucasian father and a Korean mother, my mother was my access point for our Korean heritage,” Zauner explains in “Crying In H Mart,” While she never actually taught me how to cook, (Korean people tend to disavow measurements and supply only cryptic instructions along the lines of, ‘add sesame oil until it tastes like Mom’s’), and she did raise me with a distinctly Korean appetite. This meant an over-the-top appreciation of good food and emotional eating,” she continues. (via The New Yorker)
H Mart played a strong role in how Zauner chose to honor her mother’s legacy.
“I fill my shopping cart with every snack that has glossy packaging decorated with a familiar cartoon,” Zauner also wrote in her memoir. “I think about the time Mom showed me how to fold the little plastic card that came inside bags of Jolly Pog, how to use it as a spoon to shovel caramel puff rice into my mouth, and how it inevitably fell down my shirt and spread all over the car,” she continued.
Zauner frankly talks about her grief in the book and openly discusses the catalysts behind her grief.
“Within the past five years,” Zauner continues, “I lost both my mom and my aunt to cancer. So, when I go into H Mart, I’m not just on the hunt for cuttlefish and three bunches of scallions for a buck; I’m searching for their memory…”

On Friday, Zauner took to Twitter and announced she would be embarking on a book tour, and also revealed an additional milestone for the book!
“Crying In H mart is finally out in paperback on march 28th, and I’ll be heading on my first book tour to celebrate,” Zauner wrote in her tweet. “Very excited to roll up in your city for the first time with a tote bag and a book instead of a giant trailer of gear!”
Zauner’s book tour will kick off in Brooklyn, New York, on March 27th, and will conclude on April 18th in Charleston, South Carolina.
The tour will feature 13 dates, also including a stop in Los Angeles!
