Sundance Buzz Explained: IndieWire Answers Your Burning Questions About This Year’s Festival

This year’s Sundance Film Festival marks the first in-person version of the Park City event in two years, but judging by some of the buzz, little has changed. Studio entities like Netflix and Searchlight are spending millions of dollars on major crowdpleasers, while first-time directors are making the rounds in the hopes of establishing themselves in the snow. Yet the world has changed a lot since 2020, and it’s impossible to ignore the impact at Sundance 2023, from the continuing existence of the virtual festival experience to broader questions about whether anyone will see these movies on the big screen again. For this week’s special bonus episode of IndieWire podcast Screen Talk recorded at the Canada Goose Basecamp on Main Street, Eric Kohn was joined by fellow IndieWire staffers Kate Erbland and Ryan Lattanzio to discuss all these burning questions while sharing some of the highlights from the lineup. They also share their favorite memories from Sundance over the years and explain the unique experience of returning to the in-person festival.
