Andor Timeline Repeats Disney's First Ever Star Wars Project

Andor, the next original Star Wars series on Disney+, repeats the timeline from Disney’s first-ever Star Wars project. Star Wars Celebration 2022 revealed the first Andor teaser trailer for the long-awaited show, which follows Diego Luna’s character Cassian Andor’s time in the Rebellion before the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The formation and expansion of the Rebellion is an interesting time in Star Wars’ history, and there is one other show which followed a very similar timeline within Star Wars canon.

Star Wars Rebels was Disney’s first Star Wars project after completing the purchase of Lucasfilm Ltd in 2012. Following in the 3D-animated footsteps of Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Rebels follows a small group of Rebels known collectively in Star Wars as The Ghost Crew as they serve in the fledgling Rebellion. Star Wars Rebels’ storylines pull from all corners of the galaxy, including the Inquisitors as they hunt for the last of the Jedi (a narrative thread that will also be featured in Obi-Wan Kenobi), Ahsoka’s journey after the events of Order 66, and even the fate of Darth Maul. At its heart, Star Wars Rebels is about a small group of people who found each other in the darkest of times and try to make the galaxy a better place in any way they can.

Both Andor and Star Wars Rebels follow a very similar timeline in regards to the founding of the Rebellion. Andor’s story begins five years before the events of Star Wars: Rogue One, and Star Wars Rebels takes place five years before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope. Famously, the final scene of Rogue One leads straight into the opening events of A New Hope, meaning that Andor‘s and Star Wars Rebels’ timelines are intricately linked.

Star Wars Rebels shows that the early days of the Rebellion consisted of many small groups of fighters trying to help their people and planets in any way they can, but not making much of an impact against the greater Empire. One episode of Star Wars Rebels stands out in particular in regards to the formation of the Rebellion and its link to Andor, namely the season 3 episode “Secret Cargo,” in which the Ghost Crew escorts Star Wars‘ Senator Mon Mothma to an important meeting that may change the fate of the galaxy. Mothma, who was wanted by the Empire, was one of the founding members of the Rebellion and has been confirmed to play an important part in Andor’s story. Mon Mothma will be portrayed by Genevieve O’Reilly, who will be reprising her role from Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith and Rogue One.

The obvious link between Andor and Star Wars Rebels is no coincidence. With its many shows on Disney+, Star Wars is working to achieve a more interconnected universe. The early days of the Rebellion make for a great exploration of the galaxy as a whole during such a turbulent and historically significant piece of the Star Wars timeline. It will be interesting to see if Andor will make any references to other Star Wars properties. Nonetheless, its story is sure to significantly impact the greater Star Wars timeline.
