Netflix’s Ted Sarandos Defends Dave Chappelle & Ricky Gervais Against Backlash for Transphobic Jokes
Netflix has exclusive comedy specials with big stars like Dave Chappelle and Ricky Gervais, but the streaming service has faced backlash for working with them due to transphobic jokes included in the specials.
Now, the company’s co-CEO Ted Sarandos is defending the comedians again amid all of the backlash.
Ted did an interview with The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd in which he said that comedians have to cross “the line every once in a while” to figure out where the line is.

“I think it’s very important to the American culture generally to have free expression,” Sarandos said. “We’re programming for a lot of diverse people who have different opinions and different tastes and different styles, and yet we’re not making everything for everybody. We want something for everybody but everything’s not going to be for everybody.”
“Nobody would say that what he does isn’t thoughtful or smart. You just don’t agree with him,” he added.
