Arsenal forward Eddie Nketiah is enjoying a transformative campaign.

The Englishman has helped himself to four goals in five Premier League starts ever since Gabriel Jesus was sidelined by injury. His brilliant brace in the dramatic 3-2 victory over Manchester United could very well prove to be vital in this season’s title race.

But while he has, unquestionably, taken some major steps forward in terms of his progression on the pitch, part of his incredible development comes courtesy of another major transformation off the pitch.

The once slight centre forward has added extra muscle and size to his physique, enabling him to hold off bulky defenders and protect the ball. While he has always put in the hours in the gym and on the training ground, one of the major differences is believed to be in his diet.

“When Eddie first came to us, he was actually under-eating,” Chris Varnavas, the founder of strength and conditioning company Athletic Development Club, said to the Sun.

Nketiah was given a calories goal of consuming around 3,000 – 3,500 calories a day. He was also put on a hypertrophy training program in the summer, helping him build the extra muscle and strength which is paying dividends for him and Arsenal on the pitch.

“What I like about Eddie is he is very humble. He takes his instructions really well,” Varnavas added. “Even when he first came to us, when he was around the first team but maybe on the bench here and there, he had that inner belief in himself that he could be Arsenal’s main striker. He never doubted his self-worth.”

Many believed Arsenal’s title race would collapse when Jesus was injured during the World Cup. The Brazilian had to have surgery on his right knee after picking up the injury during Brazil’s 1-0 defeat to Cameroon.

However, the ex-Manchester City hitman’s absence has barely been noticed due to Nketiah’s brilliant form. Arsenal have recorded four victories out of five in the Premier League and also progressed to the fourth round of the FA Cup with a comfortable victory over Oxford United.
