Hulu Follows Suit With Adult Swim, Fires Justin Roiland From Multiple Shows

Just one day after Adult Swim cut ties with Justin Roiland, co-creator of the smash-hit animated series “Rick and Morty,” Hulu and 20th Television have followed suit with the Cartoon Network subsidiary. Deadline reports that Hulu has decided to cut ties with the creator and voice actor moving forward.

The network and streamer opted to make the moves after allegations of domestic violence against Roiland surfaced from an NBC News report.

Hulu Cuts Ties With Justin Roiland Over Domestic Violence Charges

Roiland worked on multiple shows on the Hulu streaming service. He served as co-creator and executive producer for the hit animated series, “Solar Opposites,” where he also portrays the show’s lead, Korvo. He’s also a voice actor and executive producer on the new Hulu animated show, “Koala Man,” which debuted earlier this month.

Deadline reports that 20th Television Animation and Hulu Originals issued a statement, stating, “We have ended our association with Justin Roiland.” Both “Solar Opposites” and “Koala Man” will reportedly continue without Roiland’s involvement. Adult Swim is taking a similar strategy with Roiland’s show, “Rick and Morty,” where Roiland also portrays the show’s lead titular characters, Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith.

Adult Swim will move forward with “Rick and Morty” by recasting the roles, and co-creator Dan Harmon (“Community”) will remain onboard with the show as the lead showrunner. “Solar Opposites” would likely have to adopt a similar strategy for Korvo and any other characters voiced by Roiland. In “Koala Man,” Roiland portrayed one character in a one-off episode, Chad Wagon, a riff on real-life actor and “Fast and Furious” star Vin Diesel. So, it will be an easier role for the production to recast.

As reported earlier by The Blast, Adult Swim signed a massive 70-episode order for “Rick and Morty” in 2018. Less than half of that order had been produced when the allegations surfaced. The show’s seventh season is currently in the works, and the network has ordered episodes to bring the show through Season 10. In June 2021, Hulu renewed “Solar Opposites” for a fourth season. Season 4 has yet to debut on the streaming service.

Roiland is currently facing one felony count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one felony count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, and/or receipt by the Orange County District Attorney’s Office. The incident involving a Jane Doe is alleged to have happened in January 2020. Roiland was arrested and released on a $50,000 bond in August 2020.

Roiland’s legal arrangement took place in October 2020, where he pleaded not guilty to the charges. The case is still awaiting a trial date. Deadline notes that Roiland has a legal hearing scheduled for April 27. If convicted, Roiland could face up to seven years in prison.

Additionally, NBC News reports that a protective order was filed against Roiland in October 2020 on behalf of the Jane Doe. Under the protective order, he cannot go within 100 feet of his accuser, and Roiland was ordered to turn in any firearms he owned or possessed. The protective order runs through October of this year.

Elsewhere, The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Roiland has also resigned from his video game development company, Squanch Games, which he co-founded in 2016. Squanch Games recently released the FPS video game, “High on Life,” where Roiland voices multiple characters.

Roiland’s attorney, T. Edward Welbourn previously proclaimed Roiland’s innocence and that media coverage of his client has been “inaccurate.”
