F1 icon Lewis Hamilton has revealed a gift from one of his adoring fans once included a tiny pair of boxer shorts.

The seven-time world champion is preparing for the new season, with his Mercedes team unveiling their 2023 challenger later this month ahead of testing in Bahrain, the venue for the first round of the season.

Before the serious business of taking the fight to Red Bull and Ferrari begins, Hamilton and teammate George Russell pitched each other a series of random questions from fans for a video on the Petronas Motorsports YouTube channel. Hamilton also added in a few of his own.

Nothing, it seems, was off-limits. One asked if a fan had “ever done something to you that you really remember?”

Hamilton explained: “I’ve had kisses on my cheeks, hugs. One fan gave me a pair of these Japanese boxer shorts. They were so tiny. I was like, ‘are these kids’ ones or something?’.

With Russell struggling to keep a straight face, Hamilton confirmed: “I thought it would be funny to try them on but I couldn’t get them on.”

Hamilton was asked more serious questions, like “what traits do you admire most in others?”

He said: “That’s a good question. Honesty, compassion empathy and just driven people that are super-focused on whatever it is that they’re doing.”

In a separate video on the same channel, released this week, Hamilton opened up on his tough 2022, which saw him go through an entire F1 season without a win for the first time in his career.

“It’s been different to previous years when we’ve been fighting for wins,” he said. “We were fighting for our first fifth place but we really felt like we achieved something in those times.

“I think it’s been good lesson for us all and then to get a one-two in Brazil [with Russell winning] was a huge boost to everybody. I can’t put it into words how much it meant to everybody at the factory. It was amazing to be a part of that.”
