Harry Kane is now Tottenham's all-time top goalscorer after scoring his 200th Premier League goal to surpass Spurs legend Jimmy Greaves.

The Spurs forward scored the opening goal (his 267th for the club) against Manchester City on Sunday to achieve the feat and reach the Premier League milestone. City tried playing their way out of trouble but Rodri was caught out by Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, who immediately fed Kane to score.

It wasn't Kane's best finish – but it didn't matter – as he hit the ball into the ground past Ederson into the corner of the City net.

Of all his goals in a Spurs shirt, it would certainly have been Arsenal fans' favourite, given the implications it has for Tottenham's arch-rivals in the title race.

It was the only downside for Antonio Conte's team, the fact Kane's record-breaking strike helped the Gunners, who remain five points clear at the top of the table ahead of title-chasing City, despite Arsenal's 1-0 defeat at Everton on Saturday.

Kane, 29, had drawn level with late club icon Greaves following his winner against Fulham two weeks ago. He has now scored 267 goals for Tottenham in 415 appearances. Greaves scored 266 goals, though did so in fewer games, reaching the tally in 379 appearances.

Speaking about breaking the record after the game, Kane said: "It’s hard to put it into words, just a magical moment and I was so desperate to do it with a win as well, I wanted to win so bad.

"Once we went 1-0 up it was just about keeping the clean sheet and to do it in front of the home fans just a moment I’ll never forget.

"Especially being here at home in front of the fans, there’s been so much talk about it over the last couple of weeks and I just wanted to get it done as soon as possible so to do it in a big game against one of the best teams in the world, it’s a special feeling.

Adding of Greaves, Kane said: "A complete hero, one of the best strikers to have played the game so even to be in that company is a special feeling. Overtaking him, I’m sure his family will be watching and they’ll be proud as well, just overall a really good night."

Kane notched his first goal for Spurs just over 11 years ago, four months after his debut for the club. The then-18-year-old came off the bench for Jermain Defoe during a Europa League tie against Shamrock Rovers, grabbing the final goal as Spurs won 4-0.

He would later go on to overtake Defoe in the all-time top scorers list, with his former teammate in sixth on 143 goals. Bobby Smith (208), Martin Chivers (174) and Cliff Jones (154) are placed third to fifth, though could all eventually be surpassed by Kane's strike partner Son Heung-min, who is seventh on the list with a tally of 139.

As far as Kane's Premier League credentials go, he is now up to third in the all-time list and bearing down on Wayne Rooney, whose 208 goals could even be surpassed by the Tottenham striker this season.

Kane still has some way to go to catch the man out in front, Alan Shearer, however, as the former Newcastle legend netted 260 times in the Premier League during his career.
