Southampton sack Nathan Jones after seven defeats in eight Premier League games

Southampton have sacked manager Nathan Jones after seven defeats in his eight Premier League games in charge.

Jones was appointed in December to turn around the Saints' fortunes after Ralph Hasenhuttl was given the boot. But the south coast club find themselves bottom of the Premier League table with 16 games left.

A 2-1 defeat at home to Wolves proved to be the final straw for owners Sport Republic, who have called time on Jones' three-and-a-half year contract after just two months.

The Welshman had admitted to shortcomings when he told the BBC: "I haven't really put my own stamp on it and I should have by now.

"I was recruited to do certain things and I don't see my team in there. I have pandered a little bit. I have gone away and tried to accommodate what we have.

"I want to be brutally honest with this – I have let the players down." Speaking on Jones' exit, Southampton said in a statement: "Southampton Football Club can confirm it has parted company with Men’s First Team Manager Nathan Jones.

"First Team Coaches Chris Cohen and Alan Sheehan have also left the club. First Team Lead Coach Rubén Sellés will take charge of training and prepare the team ahead of next weekend’s game against Chelsea."

The news of Jones' sacking will delight fans who called for his dismissal in yesterday's loss to Wolves. One fan held up a giant P45 poster with Jones' name on it before getting ejected from the stadium, as other supporters sang: "You’re getting sacked in the morning."

Steven Gerrard is one of the frontrunners for the vacant post, and a few days ago ex-Aston Villa boss was 4/1 favourite to get the role. Gerrard was closely followed by Marcelo Gallardo who was second on the list at 5/1, while Scott Parker, Nuno Espirito Santo, and Mauricio Pochettino came in at 8/1.
