Cricket star Eoin Morgan has retired from the game at the age of 36.

The swashbuckling batsman enjoyed an impressive career, with the highlight undoubtedly guiding his country to its maiden 50-over World Cup win in 2019. He made the decision to exit the international stage last June, but Morgan has now decided to leave the sport altogether "after much deliberation".

In his statement, the former cricketer stated his desire to end his cricket career in order to spend more time with his family, especially his wife Tara and son Leo. "Since my retirement from international cricket, I have been able to spend more time with my loved ones, and I look forward to being able to do so more and more in the future,” Morgan said.

“I would like to say a particularly special thank you to my wife, Tara, my family and close friends who have supported me unconditionally.” Morgan met his stunning partner during England’s Ashes tour to Australia in the winter of 2010/11 in Adelaide, Tara’s place of birth.

The couple got married at the historic Babington House in Somerset in November 2018, with son Leo born in March 2020. Tara is a marketing coordinator and PR for luxury fashion brand Burberry and has previously worked for companies including Harrods and shoe designer Rupert Sanderson.

She holds a Bachelor of Laws degree as well as a BA Hons degree in International Relations. Morgan ends his career with over 24,000 professional runs in 855 appearances, spanning nearly 20 years and boasts an impressive winning percentage of 65 percent as ODI captain from 2011-2022.

After starting his international career with Ireland in 2006, he switched allegiance in 2009 in order to play Test cricket. While he played 16 Tests, Morgan's strength was in the white-ball arena and helped transform England’s fortunes in ODI and T20 formats.

Morgan was also a T20 World Cup winner, playing every game in England's 2010 triumph in the Caribbean. But after a demoralising exit in the group stage of the 2015 ODI World Cup, Morgan showed his expertise as captain.

He led the side to the final of the T20 World Cup the following year and reached the semi-finals of the 2017 Champions Trophy. These tournaments set up England’s eventual success in 2019 as Lords erupted with delight following a dramatic last-gasp win over New Zealand to become world champions in what was one of cricket’s greatest moments.

"It is with great pride that I am announcing my retirement from all forms of cricket,” Morgan said in a statement. “After much deliberation, I believe that now is the right time to step away from the game that has given me so much over the years.

"I believe that now is the right time to step away from the game that has given me so much over the years," he added. "From moving to England in 2005 to joining Middlesex, right up to the very end, playing for Paarl Royals in SA20, I have cherished every moment.

"Thanks to cricket, I have been able to travel the world and meet incredible people, many of whom I have developed lifelong friendships with. Playing for franchise teams across the globe has given me so many memories that I will hold on to forever."
