Evangeline Lilly Talks Turning Down Superhero Roles from Hugh Jackman & Joss Whedon, Explains What Changed with ‘Ant-Man’

Evangeline Lilly might be saving the day as The Wasp in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, she could have suited up as a hero much earlier.

The 43-year-old Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania actress revealed that both Hugh Jackman and Joss Whedon scouted her for roles in hero-focused action flicks.

She explained why she turned them down and how the interactions went during a recent podcast appearance. She also opened up about how the MCU convinced her to join the franchise.

While on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Evangeline revealed that she was recruited for both X-Men and Wonder Woman projects.

Hugh recruited her for the former while they were working on Real Steel together.

“He was like, ‘Hey, so, the X-Men guys are asking me if I would approach you because they know that you won’t talk to anybody and won’t do anything and you’re not reading scripts and no one can reach you,” she recalled. “So they knew I was working with you and were interested to know if it would ever interest you to do an X-Men thing.’”

“I was like, ‘No. It doesn’t interest me. I’m not interested,’” she admitted. “I was like, ‘I feel like such a d-ck because I’m talking to an X-Men! The X-Men! And I’m telling him, ‘No that doesn’t appeal. Like, what?!’ I felt so rude!”

She said that Joss appeared offended after she had a similar reaction to him trying to get her in a Wonder Woman movie.

“It didn’t appeal and there was nothing about the meeting that like, jazzed me or made me think like, ‘Oh, I’ve gotta do this.’ Nothing clicked. Nothing felt good,” she said of her meeting with him. “I am way too authentic for my own good. I mean, it’s not good. If I am not impressed, you’ll know. And maybe you shouldn’t know sometimes.”

Gal Gadot was later cast as Wonder Woman in a different project and famously played the heroine in several movies.

She added that talking about the prior roles she turned down “sounds braggy” but explained her history with superhero movies.

“And honestly I wasn’t into superhero movies and that’s the main reason why, in both of these instances, I just kind of felt like I don’t know what I get out of this,” she explained, adding that she “was known to mock them and treat them as lower forms of entertainment.”

That was the case “until Marvel came around.”

While she initially told her management that she wasn’t interested in joining the MCU, her opinion changed after she was encouraged to watch the movies.

“I was like ‘Oh they’re doing something very different and very cool,'” she shared.

Evangeline recently gave an update about one of her MCU co-stars.
